Hang on

Summer is here. And there's nothing a parent can do except hang on and ride it out till school resumes.

I remember what summer was like, back when I was a teen. If my parent's knew half the stuff I did, they'd probably have been in therapy to this day. That's because, for some reason, I was fascinated by things that went boom. I didn't get that ( Read more... )

It's a lot different now in so many ways. Besides being watched over, kids have so many more entertainment options.

Totally awesome stories. Thanks for sharing them. I'm guessing the chemical was carbide, but there are so many possibilities. When I was a kid, you could buy any chemcial at the pharmacy. We used to buy potassium nitrate and make our own gun powder. We could even buy mercury. We used to play with it in our hands. I'm not sure why I'm still alive.

Yes, Calcium Carbide and water, lots of fun. It was different when we Davids were kids. I remember breaking a thermometer and poking the tiny mercury balls with a pencil. Wouldn't happen today. Didn't get to handle it like you, though. By the way, I wished I had had a pharmacy like yours in my town, it sounds like it was a treasure-trove. From what I can tell, it was probably best you and I grew up in diferent towns. I'm sure we would have survived, but I'm not so sure about our neighbors.

Your post was hysterical. if not scary. My son is fourteen and spending lots of unsupervised time with the new neighbor through the woods this summer. My son's a total science geek. Yeah, just one more thing to worry about. Thanks. ;)

Thanks for the friend BTW. I look forward to reading more of your posts!
