"Uncle Orson" wrote a sharp and sometimes funny essay on the success of Harry Potter. You can read it by clicking on this link : Uncle Orson and the Deathly Hallows. In case you were wondering, "Uncle Orson" is Orson Scott Card.

Hi David, I'm not on LJ, but I am a fellow writer who follows your blog. My take-away came at ThrillerFest when I met David Morrel at a session he was conducting and he said something that made my writing better: "Take sight for granted, and in any given scene write to two other senses." Good Luck with your book. Thalia

Question the First: SF and fantasy are different, SF requiring some sort of scientific hinge (at least, that's what the SF writers say on the writers' boards I'm on). This would also be the reason I can describe myself as a fantasy writer, but only in a parallel universe would I ever be able to describe myself as an SF writer.

Comment the First: Isn't it nice the way the Big Name Writers are banding around JK Rowling? Awww!

Comment the Second: "Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?" I remember reading this in book 7--but it didn't occur to me till Uncle Orson's essay that it is really about writing and reading--not just about Harry's strange-death experience. Interesting, no?
