I think this must just be because I have a more... naturally submissive personality compared to you (or anyone,) but I went through this entire update like "oh my God he's been gone too long, oh thank God he's finally getting back, oh wait NO NO THE WAND DON'T FORGET THE WAND!!" whereas you were freely gallivanting around with a sense of boldness that's almost downright foreign to me and... well, forgetting about the wand.

I think I made for a better slave in this game than you did and I'm, er, not quite sure how to feel about that. But it would explain why I never made it more than about three minutes in, since progressing appears to involve more resistance than I would have dared.

To my knowledge, I've always been like that! Literally my very first memory is of me (toddler) with my parents at their friends' house, and they left me alone with a little home tabletop slot machine thing the friends had while they were hanging out or watching something or whatever they were doing. I went through half the nearby bowl of dimes by the time they were almost ready to go, and then I panicked because I thought they'd notice all the missing dimes and I'd get in trouble. I was torn between trying to win them back and the realization that sinking more in would only make the problem worse (yay for my very first memory already understanding how gambling addiction works) and I ultimately decided to not say anything and just be a terrified ball of nerves for the next several days as if waiting at any moment for them to notice ( ... )

I want to know that story too :D But... wow - what a thing to have as your first ever memory. There are things that we think as children because people don't tell us the full context, and they never think to because it's so obvious to them... you just open it up to get the coins back. The nearest thing I can think of happening to me is seeing this when I was very young and being terrified of it - there was no stated indication that the contestants were really all right once they went through!

Mmrnmhrm-mm-mm-hm! Star Control 2 has been on the list of games I've meant to play for a long time, I know certain people speak very highly of it - it just seems such an overwhelming thing to get into!

Also, sorry, this comment got caught in spam and I've no idea why.

Star Control 2 lets you falsely believe it's something easy to get into at first, with a very ease-you-into-it tutorial that just... suddenly stops.

"Step one now that you're starting out with this awesome ship you just found is to fast travel to this particular planet right here! [hotspot]"
"Great, you made it! Turns out these people are willing to ally with you but they need some ore first! Better go mine some from the next-door-neighbor planet right over there!"
"Terrific! You now have access to your base where you can manage your ships and crew, and here's a map of almost the entire universe. The enemy will be here in three in-game years. Maybe you could, I don't know, raise an army or something? Anyway good luck."

I vaguely remember there being more than that though! Oof, I wish I had time to check just now, but I do know that once you start getting beyond that point there's various hints that pop up semi-spontaneously about what you're supposed to be doing here and there, and as soon as you pick up on one trail you get led toward the places you're meant to find the next parts. Now, if you fail to write down some important coördinates and then have no idea where to go, or if you can't solve puzzles that tell you how to connect the dots/stars, then you have a problem, yes. Even in the early game though I think just trying to explore the universe is enough-the hints start coming to you once you get far enough away from your base to get into random encounters…
