I've been writing a cantus firmus for my counterpoint final. Actually, more specifically, I'm writing a "kyrie eleison" based on a paraphrase cantus firmus.

My professor probably helped cement the idea by mentioning that he had previously turned "Oops, I did it again" into a cantus.

The fun part about the "Seeking Amy" cantus is that the original already ends up in Phrygian mode, so it lent itself quite easily to paraphrasing.
