Maybe Harding House or Irving House or Mary Prentiss Inn? I don't know if any of these are really cheap anymore, though.

Cambridge Gateway Inn is walking distance to Alewife, and has a reputation for being the cheapest hotel in the area. Also for being really nasty.

The "whatever" these days is Airbnb, which is consistently much cheaper than hotels, and there's many of them in the Davis area.

I don't think I'd send my worst enemy to Cambridge Gateway Inn.

That would have more rhetorical force coming from someone whose general approach to worst enemies is in the general vein of inviting them to sit down and talk it out over tea and cookies, but point taken.

I'd try airbnb shared in that situation. Shared meaning someone rents a room in their apartment.
