Lancelot

Lancelot was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer today. Recently, he'd suddenly lost a lot of weight. On Sunday, I touched him and realized I could feel his skeleton; it felt like it happened overnight. We started observing him more closely, and he was not eating kibble, though he was happy to eat canned food. Bobby made him an appointment at the vet ( Read more... )

Oh, I'm so sorry. You never want to hear that diagnosis, either in a beloved human or pet.

Our beloved Domino had nasal cancer that moved into his skull, so we too decided on palliative care rather than any sort of chemo or radiation. Like you're doing with Lancelot, we fed him anything he would eat, so his last months were a feast as far as he was concerned! Ice cream, hamburgers, licking out all the bowls and plates even if there'd been something spiced with onions or garlic... we let him enjoy it all without regret. He was happy until the very end (he went blind overnight and that was the signal that it was time), and that meant the world to us.

It's just too bad dogs aren't like galapagos tortoises and live for 200 years. *hugs*

I'm so sorry that it's turned out this way for Lancelot, Dawn. It's never easy to have to deal with end-of-life issues for our pets. But I think you chose the best option for Lance. I found the Wendy's story very moving. I'm so glad that Lance enjoyed his hamburger and was able to take his medicine that way.

Your 7th-graders sound terrific, btw. It's probably down to you being such a good teacher.

I hope the steroids give him the life quality he deserves and that you get more time with him.

Poor baby! Twelve already, the same age as my little Benito. I don't want to be trite and say that time flies but it seems like such a short time ago they were puppies....

The advice about food seems to be the standard: just get them to eat and that means nice food seldom tasted ("comidita rica" as our vet said). I remember the oncologist recommending boiled eggs but I don't recall if daily, weekly? The key is assuring their quality of life above all else.

*Hugs tightly*

I wish I had something more comforting to say, but I do feel for you. Pet-sickness can be so hard. I hope you and B. have lots of people in your life to support you in it.
