It looks like a red-shouldered hawk to me. Then again, I'm no expert...I just know we have red-shouldered hawks around here, and he looks like they do. =)

Nice pic!

I would say Red-shouldered hawk, most definitely! ^__^

You're not going to believe this but I've never actually seen one in the wild, although I worked with them (kind of) in wildlife rehab... >_>

Thank you! I don't know why all these others people are talking about the bird ;)

Wow, nice shot. Good detail. The supraorbital ridge seems unpronounced in the close up, making her look "kinder" (cf this Cooper's hawk which looks pretty fierce). I wonder if that's just this bird or if all red-shoulders are like that?

Anyway, thanks for sharing this photo with me. The red-shouldered hawk is the type from that golfer story I mentioned. It's still upsetting, but again, perhaps God is reassuring me that everything is okay.

Keep me posted if you see her around again (BTW, just guessing on the sex... in most raptor species, females are the majority).

It was very unusual that a hawk should be so close to the house. I do see them on occasion perched alongside a highway or circling in the air ( ... )

Awesome story. When I was little, someone mentioned that God is everywhere. I'm starting to understand that a little more now that I'm older. In any case, I certainly believe that God holds power over (His own) creation and He could easily offer support through a comforting friend, or a flower opening up somewhere, or a hawk dropping by unexpectedly ( ... )
