I love how you translate into English :D From the reading Japanese text I don't get the same feeling (cuz I read it too literally orz)

I long time ago I asked my Japanese instructor what the dakuten on hiragana that weren't supposed to be there meant, such as あ”, and she said it it's kinda like the sound is pronounced in a strange/distorted way. I supposed in this case Placid is making a scared sound? I've seen in other manga when characters are talking in a creepy manner dakuten are also used like this.
