I'm guessing this is about gay marriages? Have they voted against it?? That just doesn't make sense any more, I don't get!! Even my husband doesn't understand people that oppose gay marriages.

Yup. The majority of North Carolina voted for this amendment, and thus against gay marriage. Incidentally, this new amendment affects all unmarried individuals - not just the lgbt. And there already was a law in place against gay marriage. But conservatives felt the need to put it into their state constitution.

The one glimmer of good news came the next day, yesterday, when President Obama made an official statement backing gay marriage. (And of course conservatives are calling this a 'war on marriage'.)

I saw the Obama statement yesterday! It's good to see a President actually come out and say something like that. I still can't believe there are so many people out there that still don't agree with it. *shakes head in disbelieve*

While an amendment banning gay marriage on its own would be awful enough, I read somewhere that the amendment also bans civil unions and that something like 47% of the people who voted for the amendment didn't even know that. How can you let yourself remain ignorant on a law you are voting to pass like that?!

Yeah, I read that too. Yes, that amendment of thiers affects not only same-sex couples but all couples, and like you said covers much more than gay marriage. And... yes, like you say, the icing on this gross cake is that an alarmingly high number of voters were unaware of these other components to the amendment.
