I got Jeff's laptop connected to the net. Apparently, there is a problem with Vista and WPA encryption. Usually I can suss these things out, but this time, I needed to call Netgear and get some help. "Emmett" was a huge help. (Dude, if your name is Emmett, mine is Lady Gaga ( Read more... )

TV crossover almost never work as well as comics. I mean the Homicide/Law and Order stunts were good. Some of the Law and Order's within the brand worked when they didn't seem like guests for the sake of guests. Star Trek is very much the same. I haven't seen the CSI: Miami/Two and a Half Men crossover but I suspect it is either the most painful episode of either show-- hard to imagine-- or somehow the writer's screwed up and made Lister's sandwich. (All the ingredients are wrong but somehow it works.) The worst TV crossover ever-- Scooby Doo meets Batman.

The tax thing was a done deal no matter what. Nothing republicans like more than giving tax cuts to the rich.

DADT served three purposes:
1. It was going to be ruled unconstituational anyway. This sped the process up and let them do things at their own pace.
2. It means that people will shut up about it. It's been a huge policy focus, and getting it out of the way means they can move on to other things- on all sides.
3. Republicans? The wack jobs just got a glorious fundraiser for years. "REPEAL THE REPEAL! REBAN THE GAYS!".

In reality it also has to do with a sea change in the attitudes of 18 year olds- a big generational shift here.

I know the 18-year-olds are in the military, but there aren't any voting in Congress, and I haven't seen that many Representatives or Senators caring that much what 18-year-olds think. I'm sure you're right. It's just the timing of things, and deals like this are struck all the time in the Capitol.
