So, I read this book.. something about being a pack leader, by Cesar Millan. Yes, that dog-whisperer guy. The book was a lot of anecdotes, and observations, success stories, failure stories, all that sort of thing ( Read more... )

Lol. Get into the crazy lj animal communities and they all seem to think he's some sort of horrible animal abuser. I used to watch his shows all the time on national geo until I got burnt out on reruns. He is anything but. He just shows people another way to take control of their dogs that does work.

Yup, it's a very effective way of communicating with your dog. I have to spend every waking moment with my dog, barring the very rare trip out by myself to get a haircut or something. I'm happy that I've now got an idea of how to form a better, more trusting relationship with him It helps life be smoother and easier for both of us. Correction isn't abuse, and maybe those folks like to be tied to a monster that dominates your every waking moment, but I don't. =P

Yeah, I think so, for real this time. But I've got the Alpha position because of respect and trust, now, rather than by default, and only sometimes, or maybe just because he fears me.

Well, I think it's really important for dogs to either be a leader, or have a leader. I don't think it's because of fear, per se, but, because of the need for hierarchy. It's always interesting to observe our pack mentality here when there is a loss, there is a definite re-shuffling amongst the crew.

I'm glad you and Bragi are establishing a relationship like that, he looks for it, it's a natural thing with dogs.

My cats, on the other hand, already know their position in the universe. "We are at the top, baby."
