I'll have to disagree with you. Humans don't even have the right to live. Whether and how people are permitted to live is decided by their governments. If the people in power don't care for you, they can have you killed, and/or oppress you however subtly or overtly they please.

Touche'! I do conceed to that. And it makes a great point. We only get what rights our governments, our economics, and our society as a whole allow (or don't allow).

There really is no such thing as "Human Rights" when you think about it from a dry, neutral point of view.

Everybody has the right to emergency medical care. So, yes that type of basic care is a right. In every hospital, there's a full Patient Bill of Rights posted for everybody to see.

It will never be a right because that would put an entire industry out of business and hurt our economy even more. Despite the current self-correction, health care is a growing business since the Baby Boomer generation is now entering senior citizenship.

Except emergency medical care in the modern sense is still a recent phenom, and only available in places that have facilities to accomidate to begin with.

It still can't be called a basic right because we are privleged to live in a country that provides emergency medical care, wether you pay for it or not.

I don't care if it's a right or not, as long as I get my goddamn Darth Vader suit if someone wrecks my shit. :P

I agree with you. And I can see the point you are trying to make, but I don't think that's really the heart of the matter.

To politely refine the argument, the thing about healthcare is that it is something or a service made/done by someone, so which belongs to them, and while you do have the right to property - YOUR property - you do not have the right to own SOMEONE ELSE'S property. And claiming the right to someone's property or service is slavery.
