Oscars: The Aftermath

Mar 03, 2019 04:35

Awards season is over. The For Your Consideration ads are coming down, slowly , but surely screenings are returning though we're in the fallow period where the films that studios don't have much faith in are coming out.

ABC and the Academy was on a quest to increase ratings and their hope was that a Popular Film category would achieve that goal. But after outrage and mocking from the Academy members and others in the entertainment field, the Academy abandoned that plan -- for the time being. But they may have inadvertently found out a way to increase ratings - be a total clustercuss in the lead up to the ceremony. Preliminary numbers state that the Oscar's ratings went up between 12%. While that is an impressive increase, it is still the second lowest Oscar ratings since 1974, but hey in 1974 there were three channels and now we have umpteen so give the show a break, wantcha?

While there are people who have denounced a hostless award saying that it made the ceremony feel perfunctory . These are obviously people who don't know that the very first ceremony was 15 minutes long.

The wins that night weren't without criticism. Spike Lee and many others felt that “Green Book” didn't deserve top prize. Some have dubbed it the worst win since “Crash”.

Now Steven Spielberg who is one of the Governor's of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Scientists and a member of the Directors branch plans to take the floor at an upcoming Governor's meeting an will reportedly pitch changes to the Academy's rule and make it so that streaming films aren't eligible for Oscars, and should be under the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences therefore qualifying for Emmys.

This stance has put other filmmakers like Ava DuVernay in an uproar because the feeling is that directors of color get to make the type of movies they want to make under Netflix and won't be given the same opportunity or the same reach with traditional studios. Duvernay, Cary Joji Fukunaga and, of course Alfonso Cuarón have released films through Netflix all tackling themes that would very likely not attract major studios.

In this situation, I agree with Spielberg. Netflix has programming that they submit for Emmys and Oscars. You don't see HBO doing that or Lifetime parsing their programming out because they recognize it's all for TV. To me it's the same business model of making content for the home whether on the TV or a laptop/tablet or phone.

I suspect Spielberg has more against Netflix than how they're competing for Oscars, but my feeling stems for how the theater owners are negatively impacted by Netflix. Netflix prides itself on being a “disruptor” and wanted to compete with theaters, but they court theaters when they need their space to put their films in. Netflix is that kid who steals the game ball and changes your game of HORSE to kickball.

--In every awards season there is someone who gets a fairytale story. In 2013 it was Lupita Nyong'o who became the It girl with her assorted wins and her work-wife relationship with fellow nominee Jared Leto. 2015 was Mark Rylance who made a decision to shun Hollywood in the 80s in order to dedicate himself to theatre who was now storming Hollywood thanks to hires by Steven Spielberg, a director he turned down in the 80s. 2017 was Timothee Chalamet with his oft repeated story of his public arts school education, who became a cover boy and industry darling with his exuberance over making it into "the club". 2018 was someone much older but more effusive than Chalamet.. which I didn't think was possible.

Richard E. Grant, who Michael Musto cattily wrote "made a career out of playing fussy gays", was nominated for playing a fussy gay man in "Can You Ever Forgive Me" and he took the "I'm just happy to be nominated" attitude to a whole new level by essentially live-tweeting his way through the season which gained attention from many, including his competition Timothee Chalamet.

The biggest get for Grant? He posted a picture of him delivering a letter his 14-year old self wrote to Barbra Streisand to Streisand's gated home.

Before he could even leave his daughter called him to read him the tweet Barbra wrote him.

He was in verklempt

But that was nothing to his joy at just seeing her onstage at the Oscars when she presented (she turned down introducing “A Star is Born” nomination montage).

and meeting her afterwards

I mentioned Timothee Chalamet and while I was shocked by Olivia Colman besting Glenn Close and shocked when Ethan Hawke failed to get the Oscar nomination when he essentially won every critics award, shock took on a whole new meaning when the morning of the Oscar nominations came and Timothee Chalamet wasn't on the list.

Of all the men on this list I assumed Boseman and Jackman would get the boot, but not you, Tim. Not you.

Maaaaybe I could've seen Mortenson not getting it for his n-word flap as James Franco almost certainly lost out on a nomination for his #MeToo accusations. But Mortenson had people in his corner like director/writer Boots Riley.

Anyhooo.

It's not that I think he deserved the nomination but being nominated for 19 various awards for "Beautiful Boy" signaled to me he would get the nod, but as in the case with Ethan Hawke's 50 nominations for "Best Reformed", to paraphrase Ben Whishaw's “London Spy” character Danny Holt, “The maths didn't add up.”

I was shocked but various sites were stunned and were trying to make sense of it all like a person whose home was just leveled by a category 5 tornado.

E! Was in denial tweeting this two days before the Oscars knowing damn well he wasn't nominated or announced as a presenter.

Meanwhile Sally Fields son, Sam and writer Ira Madison fought over who gets to give Timotay a shoulder to cry one.

Theories abounded why Chalamet didn't get the nomination. Some felt that voters are lazy and couldn't distinguish "Beautiful Boy" from "Boy Erased" and "Ben is Back" because "Beautiful Boy" and "Ben is Back" both deal with drug addiction, plus Lucas Hedges who stars in "Ben is Back" and "Boy Erased" also worked with Timothee in "Lady Bird".

Others felt that Timothee is too much of an It Boy has been covered by the press too much and is more a fashionista than actor.

Shush, Timmy can't hear you over his hanging with Kid Cudi, Kanye West and Pete Davidson and rocking designer suits by Haider Ackermann

Then there are others who just felt that he was committing category fraud by being in Supporting when his role was a Lead. While many voters hate category fraud the numbers of people who oppose it don't seem to matter as Olivia Colman and Mahershala Ali were both accused of category fraud (some voters felt Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz were leads; and Ali was Lead not supporting) and yet won. As did Viola Davis two years ago when she put herself in Supporting for "Fences" to not compete with Emma Stone for "La La Land".

While Timothee and Armie both sat out the Oscars and Timothee sat out the Spirit awards as “Beautiful Boy” wasn't eligible, Armie was there to present an award to Luca Guadagnino for “Suspiria”. Guadagnino is currently in production so his cast accepted on his behalf. Armie was able to return to the stage with the cast of “Sorry to Bother You” when Boots Riley won for Best First Feature.

Of course when there is a Timothee story, Armie Hammer isn't far behind...because reporters won't calm their tits and keep asking him about his former costar.

In Dec 2017, E! spoke to Timothee and Armie and Timothee said the best advice Armie gave him was come March 2018 when awards season ends that he would return back to the real world.

I took that to mean that they would go their separate ways once the "Call Me By Your Name" press juggernaut ended. That they wouldn't be seen around each other, there would be no reason to talk about each other but NOOOOOO. For some reason it's 2019 and they are still in some fanfic universe.

Armie wore as sweater that seemed familiar to fans as he was promoting “On the Basis of Sex”

I was hoping for a bromance with Justin Theroux. Rumor is that Armie has a big dick but I know Justin has. I assumed that would bond them.

-Armie was in London for the "On the Basis of Sex" press tour so Timothee dipped from wherever the hell he was to meet up with Armie and his missus.

Timotay returned to complete “Little Women”

He met up his “Hostages” costar and former “Litltle Women” Laurie, the role Timothee is playing, Christian Bale

Meanwhile Armie did Sundance to support his upcoming film “Wounds” starring Dakota Johnson and Zazie Beetz (Atlanta, Deadpool 2).

With Beetz and their director

Shaved his head right before a Jimmy Fallon appearance freaking out his stylist and his friends who knew his Christmas family photos hadn't been taken

Armie chilled with his mini-me Ford

And spent a few weeks in the Cayman Islands getting sun and gaining weight, before attending an Amazon party for “Beautiful Boy”

Timothee pressed on with the “Beautiful Boy” press tour and returned to the French chat show Quotidien which he appeared on last year in support of “Call Me By Your Name”. Armie had been there before Timothee's appearance and the host had Armie pre-tape a message for Timotay.

Meanwhile the Amazon Studios who managed the social media accounts for “Beautiful Boy” and Luca Guadagnino's “Suspiria” entertained fans.

Indiewire

Sony got in on the action

And Vogue

And Variety

As did British GQ that just had Armie as their cover boy
**Timotay was reportedly at the shoot as the photographer mentioned him online. Also, could someone tell British GQ that “bromance”s aren't typically referred as “other halves”.

As Tim was meeting in Canada with his “Dune” director Denis Villaneuve and flying to France for “The French Dispatch” directed by Wes Anderson, Armie was getting back in shape as he will be filming the drug crisis drama “Dreamland” starring Gary Oldman and Evageline Lilly.

Dev, work him hard!

In WB/CW RPS multicharacter fashion it was just announced that Timothee's girlfriend Lily-Rose Depp has joined “Dreamland” as Armie's sister.

Someone made a fandom crest for the Timothee/Armie fandom to show the Less than Six Degrees of Separation of it all.

It actually doesn't encompass how incestuous it all is as their CMBYN director Luca also directed Dakota Johnson in two films, and Dakota is in “Wounds” with Armie, will be in the CMBYN sequel if it ever goes; plus she was in “Suspiria” and “A Bigger Splash” with Tilda Swinton who will be in “The French Dispatch” with Timotay. Armie and Lily-Rose are working with Gary Oldman who Timothee lost the Oscar to and Oldman worked with Timothee's hero and former costar Christian Bale in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight films.

Speaking of The Dark Knight, you won't have Ben Affleck to kick around as Bruce Wayne anymore as he has officially departed the standalone Batman film. WB is seeking a new Batman and since Armie was hired to play Batman when George Miller was attached to “Justice League: Mortal” the comic book community are fancasting Armie, with even one site going as far as to say Armie has taken meetings with WB which he denies.

What picture does W Magazine go with to report on it?

**Batman's only gay with Dick Grayson so I don't know what this guy is on about.

Appopros of nothing Armie may be a whinge on social media but there are times when he can be chill like when he and this model were in touch because people keep confusing him for Armie and the guy told him how he's getting dudes because he looks like Armie.

Armie's hairiness puts him over Tom by a wide margin

-There were losers during award seasons and trophy winners but the real win was friendships or at least the coming together of people who normally wouldn't have the chance to get together.

Black Panther, Crazy Rich Asisans, Bohemian Rhapsody casts and Darren Criss
**U.N.I.T.Y

Adam Rippon ushered in harnesses by Timothee Chalaemet, Michael B. Jordan and Terry Crews carried it on

Speaking of carrying, Michael Bae are you considering carrying Chadwick Boseman and Rami Malek to bed because I am down for that.

”I'll make it so good for you you'll be seeing your ancestors in the astral plane

While Rami Malek was doing solo press and panels for his awards push his costars Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy and Joe Mazzello were chummy.

But no friendship made news like that of Bradley Cooper and Stefani Germanotta. I mean, I know I was a big supporter of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's relationship but man, so many people want Gaga and B-Coop to screw. Whole articles about their chemistry as if B-Coop's baby mama doesn't exist.

The Daily Mail IIRC

We know Stefani was getting too much into character when she was leaning into Bradley while her now former fiance sat right there.

Their wonderful performance staged by Bradley Cooper and Oscar's producer Glenn Weiss had a lot of fans thinking things.

They've been practicing this since B-Coop joined her in Vegas!

B-Coop and Stefani are the big screen version of Mindy Kaling and B.J Novak who once again hit up the Vanity Fair party.
