Game of Thrones: And Now Their Watch Has Ended

May 19, 2019 22:38

The Mad Queen's watch has now ended.

And so has the watch of everyone else in Westeros as the show is over.

There were enough callbacks to make me not hate the episode, but I certainly hate that Dany had to be killed in such an artless way. I think if they had either had an additional episode had one 1 ½ hour episode and killed her at the end of that then this finale would not have felt so disjointed.

We have been with Dany and her journey since S1 - love her or hate her, we've seen her try to achieve what she felt was her destiny and to just kill her off and finish the rest of the episode on a relatively light note felt dismissive of the character. I mean, Drogon was mourning for his mother and trying to nudge her awake, it was so sad and then we don't even get to see Grey Worm's reaction to her death or to see Jon maybe explain his hurt over what he had to do to his sisters. I know in this show has been built on the death of its characters and Jaime and Cersei also didn't get a prolong reaction to their deaths,

Though I did love Tyrion's grief over finding their bodies

but dang. I just felt Dany's death needed to breathe more.

This was supposed to exemplify that Dany was mad with power but I call it badassery

My biggest complaint??

Is this your king?!!

I can see how it's a full circle moment from Bran as he did have to serve as lord of Winterfell when Ned was dead, Jon was at The Wall and Robb at war

But ever since he began his training with the Three Eyed Raven Bran's whole schtick has been that he's no longer involved with the world; he's just a watcher which was evident how he sat there during the White Walker and Night King attack and did fcuk all, but now suddenly he's the attentive presumptive king? C'mon, show!

Since they're remaking their rules as they go along (Winterfell returns to independent rule, after Bran they will vote in the next ruler) why not just change the rules and let a woman lead and let Sansa be Queen with no king? She has shown strategy and leadership and Bran is holidaying in his memory palace.

Besides, there's no throne. We don't need a ruler now!

Those are my two biggest complaints really. Everything else I can easily accept like Arya giving up the Assassin's Creed life and becoming an explorer and that cheesy reference to A Song of Ice and Fire.

Things I Liked
any's murder but I loved seeing those characters again. Especially Edmure who is still a dolt.

-Other callbacks: Davos being a grammarian courtesy of his time with Stannis, Tyrion dragging the council chairs around.

-The return of Edmure and Robin Arryn. It was a very humorous scene and one I felt didn't jibe being so close to Dany's death but I loved seeing the return of these two, especially daffy Edmure.

*Also, the same people who where ewwing Arya and Gendry and saying "she's a literal child" are now saying how they want Robin "Titty Suck McGee" Arryn to suck on their breasts. Funny what a few weeks can do.

Funny what 24 hours can do. Lino Facioli waking up to write ups about how hot he became

Brienne filling in the pages of Jaime's Knight Guard pages. It was so beautiful and filled my heart because Brienne was able move past her personal hurt and disappointment and did the ultimate expression of love for Jaime that she could by revealing his true legacy and not just letting the stain of him killing the Mad King be the act that defined him. And when she wrote the last words “he died protecting his Queen” and the double meaning of that and she understood it. It hurt her but Jaime told her early on when they met, “We don't get to choose who we love.”

-I see there is some disagreement over this one on Twitter. I was fine with Jon going to The Wall again because there's no Lord Commander, there's no threat, who is really going to make him stay there? I figured he'd live there but go around as he pleased. But being with the Wildlings is much better. They are Northerners - the original Northerners at that and now he has a family and will likely have his own wife and kid.

After having two women die in his arms (one at his hands), Jon deserves this. But others feel that by skipping out on his punishment for murdering Dany, it once again shows how little value Dany's life had to the writers. (And someone pointed out Jon's dogged noble nature because Drogon took Dany's body. Jon could have just told people that Dany and Drogon left Kings Landing but Honorable Jon SnowStarkTargaryen confessed to killing her) But for Jon losing love and family and knowing that the one thing he has always sought - the answer to his parentage - is what caused this heartbreak, I am okay with how his story ended. The Starks deserve happiness.
