Title: Too Long
Character: Kira
Prompt: The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it.
Rating: G
Disclaimer: I don't own Bleach or Kira.
It’s been so long that he can hardly remember the last time. The memory is hazy-a dim recollection of a night gone by too fast. It had been raining; he remembers that much, at least. The rain had permeated everything, somehow seeming to soak him from the inside out. He remembers that... and, if he closes his eyes, he can just barely recall the scent of wet grass, wet hair... wet everything.
There’s no rain, this time. The sky is clear, the air is crisp, and a million stars have come out to bask in the moon’s radiant glow. He tilts his head, taking in the majestic glory above, burning it into his memory so that he won’t forget. This night will be over soon, and he wants to keep the memory of it for longer than he did the last.
His feet make no noise as he enters the clearing. He stops and glances around, his blond hair reflecting shimmers of pale moonlight. A shadow moves to his left and he smiles as he walks toward it. The scene he finds the moment later brings the memories back in a flood. Laughter, talking... happiness. He wonders why he’s put this off for so long.
“About time you showed up, Kira-kun.” Shuuhei’s voice floats up to him from where the fukutaichou has propped himself up against a tree.
“We were beginning to think you’d abandoned us,” says Renji, a smile in his voice.
Kira sits down, folding his legs underneath him, and offers an apologetic grin. “It has been too long, hasn’t it?”
The faces of his friends grin back at him-Matsumoto, Ikkaku, Yumichika, Renji, and Shuuhei-all bathed in moonlight and genuinely happy to see him. He relaxes, finally managing to let some of the stress he’s been hiding slip away.
Far too long.
