Karen Armstrong is amazing. I've been needing to read something like this for a long while since I'm neither a follower of organized religion, nor an avowed secularist. Her comments are extremely helpful to me. Thank you (yet again), Salon.com.
I don't know of anything right by it, but it's about midway between Georgetown and GW/Farragut West, so you'd probably have to head to one of those areas if you want to avoid pasta with runny marinara or a dinner of french fries.
Now is this prom-related classy? You're talking to a guy who avoids "classy" if he can help it. I'll make a face and plot an exit if an establishment doesn't offer draught beer for less than $5 and over 50% of the male clientele are wearing ties.
Having said that, Pizza Paradiso in Georgetown on M Street has good vegan pizza and is definitely not "Tony's Subs & Pizza Shack." That's my #1 pick. Second choice would be Amma (Indian food), which is a bit less classy, but still a good sit down place.
For future reference, nowhere near the Kennedy Center, but both classy and vegan are Vegetate (Logan Circle/Mt. Vernon Sq.) and Great Sage (a loooong road trip out to Clarksville, MD).
