I think Damon is starting to realize that someone can love him for who he is, but his life has always been so deprived of love that it's not easy for him. Not now that he feels betrayed by Stefan, who has been selfless and selfish at the same time. Damon will blame himself, no matter what Stefan does. He will because the plan failed and if he gets to know the truth eventually, he will because it's for him that Stefan decided to blow the plan...OMG MY BOYS MY BOYS ( ... )
