July afternoons were bright and hard, but as August took over its reign there was a particular full goldenness to the air, almost blurry at the edges.

Okay yes. These are mid-Southwestern summers in a nutshell.

And the whole touching-under-the-blankets passage was just wonderful. You've managed to capture the repression of the times with the uncertainty between these two as well as the dreamlike lull that always accompanies summer... just beautiful.

Adrian's backstory also fits so well with the times, too-- never thought that Manifest Destiny and the Squid would have anything in common, but that people would be united against a common enemy in demonizing the Other-- well, we've always seen that.

Isn't that what all children think? :D I love that you're able to capture the true essence of what people really think/feel in different situations instead of framing their actions through a single lens.

I really really enjoyed this. :) Definitely will be re-reading again!
