Char/Pair: Sokka
Rating: K
Words: 591
Note: written for comment_fic prompt Sokka, he walked with legends but no one remembers his name

He is heralded as the greatest warrior of the South Pole. The young children still, sometimes, ask for stories but Sokka notices a theme.

"Tell us about the time Aang learned firebending."
"Tell us about the Avatar's fight with the old Fire Lord."
"Tell us about Toph's metalbending."
"Tell us the one about Katara and the waterbending scroll."

Sokka's adventures in the library, becoming a master with the sword, boomerang, his maps, his plans, his ingenuity. Sokka is old now but he remembers the year he spent traversing the world with the Avatar like a painting. He could look at any aspect of it any time he wished.

And even though he is old, Sokka still travels. It is long and hard, the journeys he takes from the South Pole. But he arrives in the Earth Kingdom and is an honored guest of the world's greatest earthbender. The servants bow to him slightly but look confused. They know only one person of the Water Tribe and while there is some resemblance between Katara and Sokka, they do not recognize him or know his name.

In the Fire Nation he is treated like a king. Zuko dispatches half a dozen servants to be at his beck and call. And they spend much time in the War Room talking about old battles and making up new ones. His servants are polite but cold. The population of the Fire Nation ignores him in the crowds. No one there knows him.

When he tracks down his sister and Aang in whatever small Earth Kingdom town they are living in, he has the most fun. They shop together and Sokka spends time with Momo. He pats the heads of his niece and nephews. As Aang jovially strolls through town, people stare. Many people still stop to talk to him, to thank him, to repeat stories they have heard of him. Young women often stop Katara to ask advice or praise her strength. Sokka sulks in the back with the lemur.

He returns to the South Pole. The long journey is tiring. He doesn't think he can travel much after this.

Across the world, children in the Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation learn of the Avatar Aang and his quest to reunite the world. They learn of the last waterbender of the Southern Tribe, Katara and the greatest eartbender, Toph who invented metalbending. They learn of Suki the Kyoshi Warrior who brought great pride to the Earth Kingdom and the great Zuko who struggled to find himself and the right path. Iroh, the wisest firebender to ever exist, who abandoned his Nation to save the world. Appa, the last flying bison who enabled the Avatar to complete his quest. Azula, the firebending prodigy who wanted to control the world and brought shame on the Fire Nation. Ozai.

The waterbender had a brother and he, too, accompanied them, helping in some of the battles.

Sokka's great-great-granddaughter holds the attention of the tribe around a fire.

"And he knew that he had to stop the Fire Nation Airship Fleet - at all costs." The crowd of young children gasp. "He emptied the airship of its crew and threw the airship itself into the rest of the fleet, fully knowing it was dangerous and might not work." She paused, smiling at the listeners. "But it did work and while the Avatar fought for the freedom of the world, the greatest warrior from the Southern Water Tribe fought too. And his name was Sokka. And he was my great-great-grandfather."
