Annotated Bibliography

“Sexual Orientation.” No Escape: Male Rape in Prison. 2004. Human Rights Watch. 26 Jan. 2006.
In this article, the author describes what happens when homosexuals go to prison. Those (or some) who don’t know much about what goes on behind prison walls would say the sexual activity between men would be only homosexual activity, and the rape that occurs would only go on between homosexual men. However, the majority of men who get raped or victimized are the homosexual ones themselves. If a stereotypical, feminine man walks into prison, it is much easier to see them as the “woman”. Normally, heterosexual men are the ones to rape the weaker men, and when they see someone who wouldn’t put up much of a fight, they will take that chance. A great deal of prisoners are obsessed with power, however, and find a thrill in raping helpless victims. The author was also talking about how homosexuality was viewed in prison. Surprisingly, if two men are engaging in sexual activity, only one is considered the “gay one” in the other inmates’ eyes. The “gay one” is the one who is receiving the penetration, or following sexual orders than another man is giving them. Actual homosexuals who go into prison are usually fought over because of this fact. Also, because the really feminine homosexuals resemble women.

Ross, Jeffrey Ian, and Stephen C. Richards. “Don’t Drop the Soap: Sex in the Slammer.” Behind Bars. Indianapolis: Butler-Knight, 2002.
In “Don’t Drop the Soap: Sex in the Slammer,” the authors of Behind Bars are mainly giving their readers warnings on what could happen in prison. They give suggestions, like staying on guard, and as the title humorously put it; not to drop the soap. The authors talk about how rape isn’t always about sexual pleasure; it’s about violence, politics, power, and business. Raping a weaker inmate gives the offending inmate a feeling of power, and that is a very important thing to have in prison life. The authors suggest the victim to fight back if another inmate threatens, or tries to rape them. If you put up some kind of fight continuously, supposedly the sexual offenders will back off. Or, if you have to take drastic measures, the only option one may have to avoid from being assaulted would be to cause injury to the offender. However, it wouldn’t exactly be smart to kill the offender. The authors made it very clear the victim doesn’t need to be in jail for murder as well.
