if you went back in time and told my 20yo self that, at the age I am now (whatever that age may be, ho-hum), I would not only have become vegan but I would also be troubled at the prospect of buying a new toothbrush and the environmental damage caused by the 10s of millions of toothbrushes that are thrown away each year in the US

I dunno about the waste thing, somehow tooth/gum disease seems to be far more wasteful in the long run. With the level of care involved. Not to mention that tooth/gum disease leads to cardiovascular disease and all the expensive medical programs.
You could argue that if everyone was replacing their toothbrushes regularly
as advised by dentists that we could be saving billions in medical expenses not to mention deaths by the biggest killer in the united states.
One has to look at the larger picture. Penny wise/pound foolish.
