Summer has taken to barking at things lately. Now, since we no longer own a house and instead have upstairs neighbors, we're obligated to stop her from barking for the sake of said neighbors

Yeah, the back door was unlocked; we almost always lock it, but sometimes forget to. When I was growing up, we didn't even lock our front door during the day when we were gone; by assuming civility, civility existed. Then one day a kid in the neighborhood went crazy (crazy happens, after all) and killed another kid. After that, people started assuming non-civility. They locked their doors, but up bars. Then, as a result, crime in the area increased dramatically - assume criminilty (err...heh), and criminility will exist. People tend to the expectations placed on them.
I guess my point is that I have to deliberately remind myself to lock doors. I assume civility, even in uncivil areas and times. Makes me more vulnerable due to sometimes forgetting to protect myself, but it also makes me less jaded ;)

How did he get in your house in the first place.
And why would you want to keep in him in your yard? Police, forget that any sane person wants to get the scary dangerous guy as far away as possible.
