According to INTERPOL, sixteen murders have been attributed to the debate over whether Australia is an island or a continent.

Err isn't it both?

I learnt in year 8 geography that it was the only land mass in the world that was both a country and a continent.

Ausralia is the largest country in the continent of Australasia, as far as I'm concerned. Australasia is made up of Australia, New Zealnad and a whole heap of smaller Pacific islands.

Australia may well be very large, but it is a single country surrounded by water and I therefore consider it a bloody huge island. If the continent down there was called Australia then that would make all New Zealanders Australians, just as we Brits are Europeans, Kenyans are Africans, the Chinese are Asians, anyone from the USA or Canada is North American and the Brazillians are South American. However, I can't see many Kiwis calling themselves Australian. Therefore Australia is not a continent.

The continent could conceavably also be referred to as the Antipodes, I guess.

Am I going to get murdered now?

Well, with that amazing factoid I had no choice but to add you!

(and for the record, my claim is it's both and I can claim that because I live on/in it!)
