It was time to face the cold hard truth: Jungsu, their Leeteuk - their leader - their fucking umma… was losing his memories.
The first time it happened, Leeteuk hadn’t risen his head out of bed when Donghae called him from the kitchen to ‘Get up, it’s breakfast time’. It hadn’t been bad of course; they blamed it on their harsh schedule. So they all brushed it off, because, really, wouldn’t you forget to answer to your name after a harsh dance practice that almost made you throw your back out?
The second time was a little worse - he’d forgotten both Henry and Donghae’s birthdays. Normally, Leeteuk would have a large two layer cake, either made with Ryeowook’s help or purchased, decorated with a large fish emblem and a violin drawn perfectly in either corner. Everyone would have a laugh at Leeteuk when he dared them to eat his precious Mochi and Fishy’s special pieces.
No one reminded him that he used to do that - it hurt enough to know he’d forgotten.
The third time was the worst though. He talked as though Hankyung was still with Super Junior. He wasn’t though and it killed Heechul to hear the band’s leader cry himself to sleep when he found the news on the internet.
He’d always leaned on Hankyung and Heechul. They were the three eldest, it was their jobs to help the younger members behave themselves (even if Heechul had a God complex and Hankyung was soft spoken) they made a good team. Now all he had was a broken Heechul…
It had been a month after that when the 12 members called up both Hankyung and Kibum and called an emergency family meeting.
They both arrived that night.
They all sat together, Leeteuk occupied with sleeping off some medicine he’d taken to help with his back pain. Their plan was in action, each member taking a piece of paper and writing notes, printing pictures from the internet and even their own personal collection. It was elaborate enough that Leeteuk would always remember the things he should and have an easier time learning the things he needed to.
When the next morning arrived, Hankyung and Kibum having spent the night over, Leeteuk awoke to find a post it note attached to his shirt. It read, in small writing that he could swear was Hankyung’s, ‘Heard you needed help. Nightstand, top drawer… is all the help you can find.’ Curious and confused, Leeteuk took the note’s advice, knowing that he’d been having problems with his memory for a long time now and the members were starting to notice it.
In the drawer was a large calendar, packed full with extra pages and hand written notes, all of it filled with the love of the members. He opened it to a random page - April 19th. It read, in Kyuhyun’s quick hand writing,
‘This night we almost lost our lives, umma. I heard you cry out to me that night, you know? I may have been completely out of it, but I heard you. You saved my life, Leeteuk. If it hadn’t been for you, I would’ve been lost. So, without you… we’re all lost. We’re going to be here for you until the very end. We’re Super Junior, right? Always 15.’ Tears fell from Leeteuk’s eyes and he flipped through the book.
It highlighted everything, from birthdays and couples’ anniversaries to their debut date and even their very first award ceremony. Lots of it was the members’ notes on how much Leeteuk was loved and how much they wished he would get better and that ‘We need you, hyung, I need you. I can’t do it alone.’ Heechul would never admit out loud.
He flipped to the end and the page was blank - today’s date. He stood from his bed shakily, legs not wanting to cooperate and tears slipping down his cheeks faster than any Marry U performance dared to bring forth. He walked into the living room where all of his precious members were; from Heechul sprawled across Sungmin’s lap to cling onto Hankyung to little Henry curled up at Zhoumi’s feet and laying his head on Ryeowook.
They awoke when they heard a heartbreaking sob, limbs and arms flung outwards and against anyone standing in their way as they rushed towards their umma, who was now on his knees, the calendar clutched to his chest. It was hard getting a hold on Leeteuk, but that was the point of a group hug. Not many got to touch him, but the love was still there as they all shed tears.
“We’re going to make memories today, hyung. Don’t you want to add some of your thoughts to it this time?” Shindong called from underneath Kyuhyun and Kibum. Leeteuk clung to the first person he could, Kangin. They had done this in a single night because they didn’t want to lose him. There was a chuckle as Yesung felt Kibum’s hair against his arm and soon everyone was laughing, tears falling onto someone else’s hand or cheek in the process.
“Let’s make memories… and we can all share the calendar.” Leeteuk spoke proudly after the group hug was done. He placed the calendar in a drawer in the living room’s entertainment center. “Even Hankyung.” He turned to the Chinese man and he nodded as a smile wormed its way onto his lips as Heechul launched himself at the boy.
It wasn’t a promise, but it wasn’t a rejection either. Leeteuk smiled a happy smile and made his way into the kitchen to cook breakfast.
“Hyuuuuuuuuung!” They all whined, knowing Leeteuk’s lack of cutlery knowledge. A high pitched giggle came from the kitchen.
