Music is crucial - not only for Supernatural. It has the power to inspire, to create and to destroy. The music of Supernatural is a very special kind, it differs from most other shows and is more than just a background noise. So it isn't particuclarly surprising that there are a ton of fanmade mixes out there.
Most fanmixes have a theme (like Dean/Castiel for example) and try to find fitting songs. I have tried a different kind of approach. Throughout Season 4 Dean and Castiel have changed. Not every episode was crucial but many were. I've written a drabble for each of this milestones and tried to find an appertaining song showing their development, progress or regress.
So, here I bring you part 1, Dean/Castiel Season 4: Quem Quaeritis? - Not real stories but mere snapshots with a soundtrack.
Born to be wild
The cold wind blowing at Dean's face was a sensation like... like... freedom. Freedom at last. Dean didn't know what had happened, why he had escaped hell after fourty freaking years!. But right now he didn't care. He was alive. Free. That's all that mattered to him. Free.

but still blood and pain
The demons were not afraid of any weapon he could wield. His light banished the darkness threatening to devour everything. Safety and calm surrounding him like a bubble of hope. They covered in horror. He was not the only one of his kind. But he was the first one to spot the Righteous Man. He, the leader of a small and insignificant maniple. Castiel was the one to raise Dean Winchester and save him.
The boys are back
It felt good to be on a case again. Ok, there were hunters being murdered all around them and they could practically be the next victims. But dammit! It felt good. Like old times. Bobby chanting and he and Sammy firing all bullets they had. He felt more alive than he had in a long time - a very long time.

Forgotten Men
The rising of the witnesses. One of the seals. One of many. And still, violating the peace of the dead was one of the worst things Castiel could imagine. Those souls were afraid, confused and needed guidance even after the hunters had successfully laid them back to sleep. Castiel talked to them, their spirits again forgotten by the other Angels. Told them about hope, promised salvation, made them vow to God.
Spirit of Radio
The seventieth felt strange. Strange but also familiar. The music was good, the cars classy and he could live with the girls wearing funny stuff. Unfortunately he was not here for fun... But he could still take a look. Dean loved the high boots and short skirts all young woman seemed to wear. Then he saw mum. And knew he would be going to hell again. He turned the volume up. At least the soundtrack to his doom was at his liking.

Amandole
The was still doubt in Dean Winchester. Too much doubt. He did not hear what Castiel was saying. He only heard what he wanted to hear. So Castiel had to make him see. Witness everything. Let the truth unfold before the Winchester. Vouch for the truth of Castiel's words. Remove all doubts. It had all started long before Dean Winchester had even been born. Nothing was his fault and as time drew on he would understand.
St. Elmo's Fire
It was strange to see Samhain. Strange to think about Halloween, all those masked kids, all the sweets and to know Samhain - the real - was out there. Face bloody, knees still weak but determined Dean left the house together with his brother. Samhain would die. Although they had failed in defending this seal they had stopped the Angels from flattening this town and murdering all people, all children he could still see, still hear. It was no victory. But it was no loss either . Dean felt energy pumping through him (adrenaline, Sam would say) and he knew, they could do it.

Pray
Wrong. It felt so wrong. What Uriel had said about the humans, bordering on blasphemy. Their orders to let Dean Winchester decide and not interfere even if he would decide to let the Angels destroy the entire city and kill all its inhabitants. Lately his orders were... strange. Although he really did not want to he started doubting. He could no longer feel God's will behind what his superiors made him do. It just felt wrong. Paranoid
Alistair
Dean's worst nightmare.
Dean's worst nightmare come true. He felt panic rise. Panic and horror. Alistair was here. And he was after the strange girl. He needed something to ground him or he would surrender to his fear. But Sammy no longer could...

A moment of peace
Anna. His former superior, his sister, his friend. It hurt to see her confused and afraid. But their orders were clear. Capture her. Now she was weak with demons on her heels she could not possibly avoid or even fight. But they would protect her, bring her back. Of course she would have to die in the process but being a human now meant heaven was waiting for her regardless of her deeds as an Angel. God would forgive her. But why did he feel like betraying her, betraying Dean when he perfectly knew it was the right thing to do? Why did it feel so wrong?
Bat from hell
It was different. Different than all those times before Dean had sex with a woman. Anna was soft, passionate, shy. But behind the innocent mask he could sense a dangerous fire burning. She was different. Different than all other women Dean had been with. Anna was an Angel. And this was her last night on earth. Her last night as a human. Her last chance to feel. And Dean wanted her to feel.

Angels fall first
Castiel felt... sadness. He was not used to this feeling. Anna was an Angel now. Hunted by heaven. She had lost everything. Witnessing the kiss Dean had shared with her, witnessing how broken the man had seemed made Castiel realize he too had lost something. And he also felt sad for himself. Don't fear the reaper
Tessa. Dean remembered her. A reaper. But a nice one. He was not afraid of her. In fact he was no longer afraid of dying per se. He was afraid of what to come after. Hell. What would happen if he died now? Would Castiel - or any other Angel raise him again? Or would he stay there for eternity? Or would he go to heaven instead? Dean was so not going to take chances.

O Death
Death. The end of a human live and the beginning of something new - at least for mankind. But they were afraid. Afraid of the unknown. Castiel did understand why Dean asked - begged him to spare those people - good people. Be he could not. There was a natural order. And even if heaven would allow where would he draw the line? Who deserved to live and who should die? So Castiel shook his head and refused Dean his plea knowing deep down inside the hunter would not understand. No life without Death.
Bark at the moon
Alistair. His greatest fear, his worst nightmare, his teacher. And now his victim. Torturing him did not mean slicing a guy, it meant going back. Back to a place Dean hoped he'd never see again and even that would have been way too soon. Not an actual location but more of a state of mind. He had to become who he never had wanted to be but still had become down in hell. The torturer. The one to brake the souls. And now it was him who was breaking to break another being. Irony of fate.Vengeance is boiling as screams break the night.

Hope
Castiel knew what he was asking of Dean. He knew of the danger. Dean Winchester might just break. But he had to. There were his brothers dying. He still had hope. Although there was something... a... a gut feeling - although Angels didn't have guts nor gut feelings. He knew something terrible was going to happen. But he could not stop it. He saw the frenzy in Uriel's eyes, the arrogance, the anger. No, something terrible was going to happen and he had no way to stop it. He just did not know if it involved Dean Winchester or his own brother Uriel - or both. Today he was going to lose one of them. And he would cry for both.
An honest mistake
A prius? Seriously?! And all the crap Dean had stuffed his face with - detoxing? Are you kidding? The thought of this... this... stuff made his stomach churn. Had it all been Zachariah's idea? Or were indeed somewhere deep inside of him those strange impulses he had acted on while being mind-whammied? He was never ever in his entire live going to talk about those things. Never. And if Sam started? Then he'd have to nurse a shiny new pair of black eyes.
4.17
Path
Zachariah. Castiel's superior. He knew he was under surveillance. He knew Zachariah thought he had become too close to Dean. But this latest trial was simply too much. How could an Angel of the Lord torment any human repeatedly? How could an Angel of the Lord be that cruel? Zachariah had said this was for Dean's best. He had assured Castiel that the Winchesters were safe. And Castiel knew he had seen the look in his own eyes. The doubt, the incomprehension, the determination to intervene as soon as... Castiel had quickly looked away but now they both knew. And Castiel wondered if he was the next to fall.
Living after midnight
Surreal did not even cover it. Weird was an understatement. Dean was freaked out. Reading about himself reading about himself reading about himself... arg! All he wanted to do was turn the music up and floor the gas pedal. Run. Just run didn't matter where to. Just away from this... this... books. And fans. And the dork Castiel called prophet. And now there was Lillith too. And according to 'The Prophet Of The Lord' Sam would have sex with her. And Dean was so going to stop that. One demon to screw was one too many. Damn, he really should have stayed in bed this morning. Only a few hours left than it would be tomorrow and hopefully a better day...
4.18
I'd lie for you
When Castiel had seen Dean's disappointed look he had to help him. Had to hint that the Archangel would be able to scare Lilith of. And as soon as the human's eyes had lit up with understanding Castiel had had to fight hard not to grin. Dean had turned to leave and Castiel quickly had vanished, was no longer able to prevent a huge smile spread on his face. Now he was hiding. Shocked about what he had learned about himself. Dean. He would do anything he would ask him to. Anything. As Dean would say, he was so screwed. Castiel sighed and the dirt around his feet started to form a name. He quickly left, only the letters Dea staying behind.
Bohemian Rhapsody
Seeing Cas scared - and he really looked scared - scared the shit out of Dean, too. And Jimmy - he was so Castiel and still not. His voice not this deep gravel tone that demanded obedience. His face alive, more expression than just mild confusion or slight disapproval . Everything that had happened to his family, the father being possessed by an Angel, demons taking over mum, killing the father who was angel-less but the Angel returned and took the daughter to kick some serious ass before the father pleaded for the Angel to posses his body again before he'd die of this lethal gun wound... Dean felt like being stuck in a bad TV show. No, not stuck. It felt like watching one. He was feeling detached. Although standing smack in the middle the action. But as soon as Dean noticed Sam sucking the demon's blood like a fucking vampire it was enough - no it was actually too much! This had to stop. Now.

You do not serve mankind. You only serve us. Remember this, Castiel. Remember and we will forgive you.
Again pain seared through him, threatened to rip his Grace out and Castiel started to pray anew. Down down
Down, deeper and deeper. He'd never thought they could fall that deep. But whenever he thought they'd reached the bottom, couldn't possibly fall deeper, his brother proved him wrong. He felt like Sam had literally removed the ground below his feet. The fall didn't end. With Sam leaving Dean even fell faster.

Faraway
Everything was falling apart. Castiel watched the Winchesters. Saw the struggle. Saw the fight. Castiel watched the seals as the last few were broken. And his brothers watched Castiel. The pain was still fresh. But he was doubting anew. When he released Sam Winchester he knew it was wrong. His orders were wrong. But how was he to disobey. Would he be able to change anything? No. His place was here, on the earth, between humankind. He was a soldier. Not the strongest or the mightiest, but he was a soldier. And he had a battle to fight. Even if it would kill Dean inside?
Final countdown
When Castiel brought Dean to Chuck's place he was taken aback. The Angel finally grew a pair. The last seal. And his brother was about to break it.Unknowingly. Believing that he was doing the right thing. Oh, Sammy. Castiel touched his forehead and white light blinded Dean for a second then he was somewhere else. Knowing that he had to stop Sam. Stop him from freeing Lucifer. The fucking devil himself. He had to succeed. And he would. Even if it was the last thing he'd do.
4.22
End of hope
Castiel knew Dean was right. Castiel knew he had to help him. And Castiel knew as soon as he had banished Zachariah that he was going to die. He promised to fend off all Archangels that were coming for Chuck. But he did not tell Dean that. Instead he sent him to his brother. Knowing he would be too late. Knowing everything was in vain. But this was their fight. They would not die in silence but in a battle. Apocalypse was coming and today an Angel would die. Die or fall.
