Podfic recs: When a Man and an Angel Love Each Other Very, Very Much...

Feb 25, 2010 05:28

My original signup was for fic, but my muse has been super-balky every time I've attempted it (probably because I'm finishing a longfic that is eating my brain). I've decided to do an end-run around the fic muse and try a couple of drabbles later in the day, but my main contribution today will be some favorite Dean/Castiel podfics.

I do two hours of commuting over Winchestery back roads every work day, and podfics are my chosen method of keeping my sanity. I've become a voracious listener of SPN podfics in particular, possibly because of the endless rural two-lane (in Wisconsin, which we all know is full of supernatural weirdness and evil killer clowns). Since my fic muse is being a pain in the butt, I offer a list of podfic recs, featuring Dean/Castiel, ranging from the funny to hot to angsty to holy crap!super angsty.

Spilt Milk by sparky77, Dean/Castiel, PG, S5. Read by crinklysolution. 25 min.

Sometimes when a man and an angel love each other very, very much ... his little brother has to give things a big fat nudge in the right direction.

This Sam POV fic is very much informed by how complicated things have become between Sam and Dean, while also exploring who Sam and Dean have been to each other since they were kids, and how their worlds revolve around each other.

Crinklysolution's reading of Sam's drunken skit about Castiel and Dean is so damn funny. "Marvel at the mystery" indeed. I've listened to this 3 times, and each time I forget that's coming, and then I squee and hoot when it comes around.

Sweet and funny and kinda awwwww and highly recommended.

Fourth Wall Series by corona, Dean/Castiel, Sam/Lucifer. Most PG13 with a couple of R entries and one NC17. S5. Read by cookiemom6067. 4 hr. 30 min.

What's a fangirl to do when the showrunners start producing crackfic of their own? Tell 'em to step aside, sonny, and let the experts handle the fic, that's what. Corona has done here, as the Winchester boys introduce Castiel to the world of Winchester fanfic, and he takes to it like ... well, a crackhead. Meanwhile, Lucifer is invading Sam's dreams and also discovering through fanfic that there are more fun things than ending the world and destroying mankind. There are plenty of laughs as Castiel turns his avid curiosity on mpreg, tentacle porn and just about every other fic trope.

See the World in Green and Blue by parenthetical, Dean/Castiel, R, S4 (through 4.10). Read by pandarus aka FayJay. 1 hr.

I think this is the first Castiel fic I ever heard, and one of the first podfics I listened to. Some of the speculations about angels and the angel/vessel connection have been jossed, but it's still a wonderful story. When Dean reacts angrily to Castiel's statement that he finds humans to be works of art, Castiel decides he'd like to experience life as if he were human for one day, with Dean as his guide. Sam thinks they should visit churches; Dean thinks laundry, pie and alcohol should be involved.

This is a gorgeous fic, especially when describing in Castiel's POV how he sees the world through the filter of his grace. He has a subtle humor and an openness and curiosity about humanity that are beautifully explored. FayJay is a terrific reader, who acts as she reads, yet it's completely natural. She uses breath, hesitation, inarticulate noises as well as the words she's given, and it sounds just like the way we speak. She chooses (and writes) fics with a great sense of poetry, and her reading serves that quality brilliantly.

Control written and read by pandarus aka FayJay, Dean Smith/Castiel, NC17, S4 (through 4.17). 1 hr 30 min.

Written from a kink meme prompt influenced by Secretary, this Castiel POV fic injects him into the phony life Zachariah has constructed for Dean Smith. He's been given his own assignment, but discovers sometimes defiance serves a higher purpose than obedience, as Castiel learns how to give Dean not what he asked for, but what he needs. The fic acknowledges the thorny moral issues in interacting with not!Dean and in using his vessel, handling them well. There is spanking and desk sex and more, both hot and with a complex emotional payoff. Dovetails neatly into canon with maximum impact for the characters. And boy, did I want to kick Zachariah in the teeth with every appearance he made.

I encourage you to search for more FayJay-read and/or authored fics in the archive. There are a lot of them, many featuring Castiel, and they rock.

Make the Man by trinityofone Castiel/Dean Smith, NC17. Read by podcath. 1 hr. Another Castiel-POV take on "It's a Terrible Life," this time with Castiel going against orders to keep watch over Dean. Lovely character stuff as Castiel misses the clothes that signify Dean to him and begins wearing them himself in his encounters with the buttoned-down Dean Smith. This story has a great payoff in terms of Castiel's growth as a character, and what's to follow.

Chrome by seraphwings Castiel/Dean Smith, PG13 (some non-consensual touching). Read by twasadark 30 min. This Castiel POV fic is dark and creepy and funny as well, with Dean's possession by something inhuman that has a obsessively protective streak toward Dean and a serious hate on for Castiel and Sam both. The flashes of humor come from Castiel's weary civil servant of the Lord attitude toward his assignment and the inevitable difficulties that result. Very cool idea, brilliantly executed and well read by the prolific podficcer twasadark.

Five Futures Dean Sure as Hell Isn't Going to Let Happen, an anthology of 5.04-inspired fics. Read by luvplatinumbaby, 1:45. Contents: "All You Sinners" PG-13, by trolllogic; "All the Way Through" NC-17, by tracy_loo_who; "Salvation (with a Few Detours Along the Way)" PG-13, by morgane; "Medicine Jar" PG-13, by veggie17 and "Doesn't Matter" R, by naimu. (Available with or without musical interludes between fics, and also separately under each individual story title. Search the title at audiofic.jinjurly.com for the full range of options.) "The End" created an explosion of comment and fic, because everyone wondered how Dean and Castiel could wind up so hopeless, their natures twisted into something barely recognizable. This podcast collects five stories in that verse, in multiple POVs; some are as bleak and terrifying as Dean's vision, some hold a glimmer of light and hope.

In the Silence Afterward by ibroketuesday Castiel/Dean, NC17, apocalypse fic. Read by fullondazzled 1 hour 15 minutes.

The author warns for violence and brief torture, "angst and darkness up the wazoo" and character death. So yeah, there's some serious hurt going on here. Written during the hiatus before S5, it begins with Lucifer's rising and tells a different story than S5 has. Dean POV. Imagine the worst thing that could happen in his view, and that's where things start, and Dean goes mute. Castiel has suffered his own devastation at the hands of the archangels, but he makes his way back to help and protect Dean. The world shatters around them as Lucifer toys with it like a cat with a wounded mouse. Both irrevocably cut off from their brothers, they find a slow path toward a deeper connection with one another. Powerful and heartbreaking and very well read, this is a multi-kleenex story, so be prepared.
