suggestions

Since I'm very unfamiliar with most of the places we'll be going and what's there, I decided to send out a question to a bunch of people at work asking if they knew of anything along the way that would be of interest (I like first hand accounts more than print and online research). Seems most everyone is familiar with Roanoke and not so much the ( Read more... )

-Smith Mountain Lake is nice but filled with frat boys and yuppies.
-Carter Mountain Orchard is near Charlottesville, it's where we would go every year to pick apples, but in the fall. I don't think there will be apples now.
-I hate hiking Humpback Rock by the way
-I would enjoy going to Peaks of Otter
-Crabtree Falls is good
-Natural Bridge everything- yes!
-Goshen is pretty, very "squeal like a pig" area though

I have always wanted to go to Hot Springs/Mineral Springs, VA and sit in a Natural Hot Mineral Bath if we go that way.
Isn't Dinosaurland in Virginia?
I think asking locals along the way could also be a fun way to discover weird and fun things.
My food suggestion would be to stop at any and all ice cream booths, shops, stands, etc. To experience the various ice creams of Virginia. :P I plan on taking you guys to a great homemade gelato/ice cream/sorbet shop in Staunton while you are here.

That sounds good! I wouldn't mind going to Hot Sprins as that is where my dad was born and I've never been. Anything involving water is fine by me (and by this I'm not actually HOPING for rain), natural baths, swimming, bobbing for apples! Dinoland is in VA but I'll have to look up where. Ice cream is always a winner provided there are no lactose intolerators. I'm all for playing it be ear as we go along. I just like soliciting ideas for fun! :)

you didn't really use the ! rating system, so it looks like the only thing you want to do is Peaks of Otter Winery and rolling!

Two weeks ago when we went camping & hiking at Catawba every fucking person we passed on the trail there mentioned the Homeplace. I understand it to be legendary, compulsory eating but i think they're only open half the week.

Up on any and all hiking. Going to bring a pair of trail runners just in case. Love the food ideas (although there are too many in Roanoke to deal with!). A winery might be cool - on the fence about that. Love - love the Rt 39 idea. That looks like a FUN road.

NB wouldn't be too far out that we couldn't make day trips from Becky's if we camp out there a couple of nights. And there is a TON of things around there!
