He's flipping idly through the channels and watching the hands on the clock tick while he listens to the hiss and pop of the oxygen tube. He swears he can hear the IV dripping. This one was close, too close, and waking up to see Heather's teary eyes over the mask they had her wear the first time she came in to visit still haunts him. What hell had ( Read more... )

"I came by earlier, but you were asleep," Jenny says, standing in the doorway. She's not interested in sticking around for a warm visit--she's anything but warm, even--but she wanted to at least see for herself that he was alive and that the opportunity to kill him herself was still there. The scary part is she probably could do it now. She keeps her hands in her pockets as she stands there, somehow managing to keep her body language open and still closed off.

He coughs and looks at her, tired. God it's good to see her, even though it's clear she'd rather be having dental surgery without Novocaine than standing anywhere within a fifty foot radius of him. He doesn't care. She looks good and she made the trip. That's something. "They told me," he says neutrally, making a point to not mention her sister. He doesn't like her body language but he also isn't going to push. He's too out of it. "Thanks for coming."

"I always will," she answers. And that's the sad truth; she probably always will. There's a moment, just a brief quiver, where she almost softens. She almost crosses the room to stand near him, to take his hand in hers. Just like the last time. But then she remembers her sister is probably lurking around somewhere and it keeps her feet firmly planted where they are. It almost feels like heartburn, except it isn't.

He gives her a soft look. He's coherent enough through the painkillers to see the brief change in her eyes but she masks it quickly and he gives it to her. "Me too," is his response. He wants her to come sit down but isn't going to make her do anything she doesn't want to do. So he switches to business, hoping it'll make things easier. "I don't remember what happened," he wheezes out.
