Six hours of hell and a commute that pushed his last button later, he made his way through the door, toed off his shoes, and took a deep breath. She had been expecting his call, but when the phone rang a few minutes later, she didn't answer it on the first ring. Or the second. Or even the third. By the fourth, she picks it up and gives him her usual greeting.

He'd wince at the tension in her voice, but he's not going to fight with her tonight. This is too important. "Something's bothering me about this case Vance has me doing. That is beyond the lack of experience the agents have or that you weren't told about it in the first place." He takes a breath. "Jen, if we go in, we're compromising the safety of an entire unit. One of the guys we're after was a superior officer of mine in Iraq. He'll know me. Vance is ignoring my concerns on this."

The tension isn't just for him; it's for every way the universe is trying to fuck with her. She wont let it win, but it's putting up a good fight. "So what do you want to do about it, Jethro?" she asked. "If you go in, you get instantly made. If you don't, Vance knows you're up to something." She wants to hear his thoughts and hear things from his perspective before she makes her decision.

He sighs and rubs his eyes, more tired than he wants to admit. Three hours at the ER, standing watch all night, the morning fallout, six hours of training, Vance, and California traffic have all conspired to make him tired and testy and he just isn't sure how to proceed. But she's right. It's his job to present options, so he takes another breath. "If it was any other team at all, I'd pull back into observation and send them in. But these idiots Vance has put into place here couldn't act their way out of a wet paper bag ( ... )
