Comparing this version of Hawk and Dove to JLU's version is completely unfair to JLU. Yes, "Hawk and Dove" sucked but JLU put in the time to completely nail Dove's characterization as a pacifist. At no time does JLU's Dove actually commit violence in that episode. He uses Akido style moves to turn his opponents' agression back on them without actually hurting them. Plus the brothers obviously care for each other a great deal and their political discussions, if not exactly thought-provoking, were somewhat refreshing for a kids cartoon.
BATB's versions are cartoonish caricatures of conservatives and liberals who bicker like Ren and Stimpy. It's hard to believe Dove when he calls himself a pacifist in the episode considering the amount of violence he commits (most of it against Hawk).
I like your perspective on this, Matt. I feel really bad now, because I took it as a gag about how no one ever really listens to Batman then in the main episode, OMAC does so and beats Shrapnel.
So if you were in the seat for this, how would you have altered Hawk and Dove for the brief time they had?
I would probably would have debuted them in the episode length format first. Their relationship is kind of too complex to debut in three minutes, at least I think so (I don't know anything about the comic's version).
Hawk and Dove as an episode was in general badly written (Diana has never been treated so poorly) but I was seriously impressed how they managed to put Dove in "fight" scenes without him committing actual violence or hurting anyone. That took a LOT of foresight and obvious planning to make work and you don't even realize that's what's happening until you see the episode a few more times, or somebody else points it out. Even when Dove argues with Hawk in the episode he does so from a rational, non-angry point of view and it's obvious Hawk respects him for it.
Equinox made this episode, and I'm interested to see more of him. The Oded Fehr connection...maybe Equinox serves the Lords of Order and Chaos or something?
