As someone who took a long time to come to terms with his sexuality, I can say that what you saw with John and Charlotte in no way means John isn't gay. I had a girfriend, had a full sexual relationship, but it was all in an effort to 'change' my sexuality. My ex b/f Alex is, I'm convinced, still trying to do it now. I don't know if there is a chance of a relationship for you and John, but I would say at the very least he is bisexual. People who are not happy with their sexuality will go to great lengths to deny it - not just to others, but to themselves.
