What does she think the lesbian scene in San Francisco is like?

In brief, a lot of "bois" acting like, well, teenage boys: looking for a string of hookups with ultrafeminine femmes while denigrating and objectifying them. Also there is apparently a fad for FTM surgery.

I don't know much about it myself, but that sounds a bit like an outsider's perspective to me: the relationship between FtMs and the lesbian community is very complicated; and most FtMs don't get bottom surgery. In general, it rings a little false to me.

Just finished this. I largely agree with you, and thought that the chapter on the SF lesbian scene was particularly iffy--very much an outsider's perspective looking to uphold preconceived ideas. As ianuki says, the relationship between FtM trans folks and the lesbian community is definitely complicated, and the history of butch/femme relationships and identities is as well. There's been a certain amount of "Oh no, you are male-identified and recreating the patriarchal model, how could you!" that Levy seems to be channeling as she discusses bois, with a side of "Oh no, casual sex, this is terrible!"
