Ugh...decisions

So I was all set on Washington University in St. Louis. Then I visited the University of California, San Diego. And then I got in. Now I'm totally confused, because they're both awesome choices for different (and some similar) reasons. I'm going to meet with some professors, talk some more to graduate students from each, and try to work things ( Read more... )

Well for one thing, it's exceptionally strong in some interesting areas - neurobiology, glycobiology, cancer biology, and stem cell biology come to mind. They're also immersed in a highly interdisciplinary environment, where collaboration is not just a theory, but a reality. As a BMS student at UCSD, I'd have the opportunity to rotate with or work with a number of researchers not just at UCSD, but also at the Scripps Research Institute, the Salk Institute, and the Burnham Institute for Medical Research. Additionally, there are several hundred biotechnology companies all interspersed in the area. All told, the opportunities in about a 40 minute walking diameter are quite impressive.

Finally, it's in La Jolla. It's beautiful, the weather is incredible, and there's a lot to do outside of academics.
