Officer's Mess - George and Leonard

*He was early for lunch, but Bones wasn't going back to his rooms, not just for a few moments* *Sitting at a table, he waited for Jim's dad to arrive*

*Rubbing his eyes, he picked at the food he'd selected from the mess. Today had been almost as bad as yesterday, and he still hadn't seen Jim alone since he'd dropped him off in his room early that

Seems to me Jimmy said you got him on the ship in the first place.

*Quietly* The morning I died, I'd gotten up, feeling pretty good. Had my breakfast, kissed my wife, and went on duty, expecting it to be just like any other day. Figured I'd write Chris and Junior that evening, after snuggling with Winnie, and talking about our days.

That changed in twelve minutes but the people I loved? Could at least take with them the fact that my last thoughts were of them, that they knew I loved them. They didn't have to wonder and hope, because I'd told them that.

What are you going to regret if you died in twelve minutes? *makes a move* Check.

*softly* I couldn't just leave him there...

*the board looked bleak - he was in check and his king was fucked* Guess I lost this one.

*when he saw that George was still watching him, he took a breath* *he wished he could explain to George about all the shit going on, with the other Spock, with all of them. To go to Jim right now, that would just be disastrous. Wouldn't it?* Point taken. *long sigh* Maybe... maybe we'll have that talk soon. Once all this shit is fixed, and he doesn't have to worry about every fuckin' person on this boat and their problems. Soon...

*he gave George a half-smirk* He does that, too, you know. Charming little bastard. Talks slow and steady and you don't even realize you've made a 180-turn until it's done, just from a conversation. Must be something they grow in Iowa.

That's a sign, you know.

*laughs* Well, I was grandmaster back at the Academy. I wouldn't feel too bad about losing.

*gently* If you wait for that, the universe will go supernova before that happens. He's the Captain of this ship, and there's never going to be a time when he's not worrying about everyone, and their problems and trying to fix them all, anymore than there's going to be a time when you've not got patients, and people counting on you. If you don't get up to the plate, you're never going to hit that home run.

*chuckles* Kirk men are good at convincing folks of all sorts of things. Thing is, some people are just smart enough to look at the possibilities we offer them, and take that leap.
