State of the House

Resident Assistant Guyton, Resident Heads Thompson, women of the Council, fellow residents:

I report to you now, that the state of the house is good.

We come together in a time of good fortune and population growth. In case you didn't hear, last week, Resident Heads Thompson ushered in the arrival of a new Hendu, Sophia Elise Thompson, who, with Nicholas, is sure to bring us much joy in the future. We have twice the ammunition now in a war of RH baby cuteness.

This generation of the House has been blessed in many ways. New furniture took the place of the old, ugly, rat-inhabited "sofas" of the past. Brand new cabinets, albeit locked, add a more sophisticated ambiance to the house's communal areas. We learned that a newer kitchen does not translate to a cleaner one, even under the stricter supervision of a new Kitchen Czar. But most importantly, we have been joined by the leadership of a new Resident Assistant, Kristi Guyton, whose wealth of energy, unending dedication to IM football and culinary expertise have continually pushed this house forward. I thank Assistant Guyton for her wisdom, vision and year of service to Henderson House. (applause)

The house was more social than ever, though still having fewer alcohol-related emergency room trips than Tufts house. Poker, the West Wing, Mean Girls, Karaoke Revolution, Cool Runnings, and Sex and the City brought people together in common spaces. New first years, faced with the prospect of leaving home for the first time, were quelled in their fears when a new self-proclaimed bedtime story czar took the weekly stage. With house associates more active, more vocal, and more alcoholic than previous years, social life with former Hendersonians hit an all time high.

In 2004, Henderson house was no stranger to crushing defeat, tying for 3rd place in the annual Pierce Sports Frolic. This year, Shorey house decided to make a frickin' flag, bringing their "we're on top" slogans back to the table. One may say Shorey spoke too soon, for the wheel was still in spin. And there was no tellin' who that it's namin. For the loser now will be later to win. For the times they are a-changin.'

Participation was also strong in IM sports this year, letting the Wombat cry be heard loud and clear. Henderson made the play offs in football of both American and European sorts, leaving Asian football to be dealt with in the coming year. We look forward to another active and successful season next year, breaking even more broomball sticks than this year.

Henderson house cares just as deeply for the life of the mind as that of the body, as was made clear this winter with the first ever Henderson bipartisan debate. Although there was no clear victor, a precedent was set, and organized intelligent political discussion will always have a home in Henderson.

This time of the year is marked by stress, anxiety and parting, but also by new hopes and dreams for the coming year. In this time, it is important to remember what is at the heart of Henderson. That is, in one word, awesomeness. We may move out to an apartment, another building, or become RA's, but we are still Hendu. We may not have shower curtains, but we are still Hendu. I believe the true spirit of Hendu may have been characterized best by Charles R. Henderson himself: "the insane are sometimes improved merely by giving them companions."

May times bring you great fortune, and remember: the secret to getting ahead is getting started. Henderson is awesome. We are awesome.

I acted as Sam Seaborn Toby Ziegler.

You get extra points for being able to tell:

3) Which subject Mitcho and I had to ask for fact checking on.
