Subject: Azula, Kasumi Tendou
Table: A
Prompt: 021- Aloof

There are several people on the community, Azula has noticed, who are nice to pretty much everyone. Some of them seem patently oblivious of her true nature. Others seem confused and skittish around her. Azula doesn't bother with most of them. However much she dislikes the rude people, she finds the stupid ones (or at least, that's how she sees them) to be an even worse waste of time-- people like Giselle, Tamaki, and Kobato, who call her "hurt" and "damaged" and "sad" and other things that she pretends aren't at all true.

Then there's Kasumi-- soft-spoken, level-headed, and eternally polite. Azula met her at a rather unusual time-- when she had been turned into an eight-year-old child by Eris. She talked about the war. She talked about how superior the Fire Nation and its royals are (except for Zuzu and Mother, of course). She talked about firebending, and Agni Kais, and executions. That was the first time they really spoke. The second time, Kasumi offered to cook a three-course meal for her.

Azula doesn't know what to make of her.

She isn't all that rude to her, at least not at first-- she is, after all, perfectly capable of being polite, and while she doesn't necessarily like Kasumi she doesn't really dislike her either. But after a while she grows harder, speaking more harshly to the girl, and ordering her about the way she orders her servants. She's testing her; trying to see what her limits are. It's a compulsion that Azula often has around people that are just too nice. On the surface, however, she's courteous, the way she always is with people who know how to treat her with respect. But she isn't nice. (And it's easy to tell the difference, with Azula-- courtesy is shallow and disarming and easily faked, while niceness is fumbling and awkward and rarely seen by anyone other than Ty Lee.)

Whenever Kasumi brings her food, Azula waits in her room. The other girl enters (after knocking, of course), a demure smile on her face. I hope everything is to your liking, Your Majesty. Is there anything else you would like, Your Majesty? Tell me if there's anything more I can do, Your Majesty.

Azula does like Kasumi-- but for all the wrong reasons.
