Prompt: prompt-10 secret
Despite the situation Shinichi had unknowingly landed himself in and the notable lack of strength in his painkillers, he found that did actually quite like the room he’d been given to recover in.
The small faux child sat with a book sitting in his lap as he calmly changed the page. The book was one of many that he had read over and over again. It was also his favorite of the Sherlock Holmes books, Sign of Four. He’d packed several mystery books before coming on account of he knew he’d be staying in a hospital bed, which was not going to help his plan of not wanting Ran to worry.
But now wasn’t the time to dwell on that, Ran was a strong girl and he respected her for it, she’d feel bad, but she wouldn’t hate herself, hopefully. Now was time for him to get lost in the familiar world where he knew absolutely everything that happened. He looked up as he heard the door creek open and a beautiful blonde woman in a nurses outfit stepped inside with all the confidence in the world.
Ordinarily, Conan did not mind nurses coming in to check on him, but this was no ordinary nurse. Bright blonde hair and the icy eyes of a cold-blooded assassin he knew as Vermouth. And no one was ever happy if an assassin came to visit them at the hospital.
Reasonably on red alert, Shinichi shut the book and sat up straighter to pierce her with a dark glare which she returned with a small smile and moved to take up the chair by his bedside.
“You.” Conan snarled. There were two reasons Shinichi was not particularly happy with seeing this woman, one being the obvious, she was an assassin, the second meant she had world hopped. Somehow she’d gotten here, to another world. That leaned heavily towards the ‘The Syndicate has world hopping technology.’
Another thought struck him. “Oi.. how’d you get in here? You may be dressed as a nurse but that-you wouldn’t look familiar to anyone.”
“That’s a secret…” she answered predictably.
Shinichi offered a short glare and then hopped back on the world hopping train of thought.
“So you can world hop.” Shinichi smirked, it quickly faltered at the smirk Vermouth returned to him.
“Did I say that?” She tapped a perfectly manicured nail against her soft lips.
“You’re here aren’t you?” The detective glared. Vermouth took a long calculating breath and glanced out the window.
“People ask for world hops on the community all the time, don’t they?” Conan opened his mouth and then shut it as she was right.
“So you can’t world hop.”
“I didn’t say that either…” she tapped her chin, watching him.
“Well, quite obviously you did world hop.” Shinichi pointed out, earning a smile that sent shivers up his back.
“On that we can agree…” She took a small strand of her blonde hair and ran a finger through it, kicking her crossed leg lightly as she sat.
“Why are you here?” Conan demanded, his tone full of authority a small child should not have. The Lady looked at him levelly and set her hands gracefully in her lap.
“If you’ll remember, the community recently acquired two more detectives.” She stated, “I won’t have any more call outs, you understand?”
“That wasn’t my fault.” Conan pointed out. “You’ve attracted the attention of someone else, isn’t that what you’re after, making the organization bigger?”
A smile, a smile that made Conan doubt his deduction.
“Whatever gave you that idea?” She sat up straighter to hear his explanation.
“I’m not stupid, the bigger you are the less of a chance anyone else has, not to mention the more resources. Admit it, you’re trying to make it bigger.
“I’m not admitting or denying anything, cool guy, I’m only here to warn you; the bigger your team gets, the more casualties there’s sure to be.” She stood up quickly and shoved a hand in her pocket, Conan watched curiously.
Vermouth held in her hand a small syringe and tapped it lightly. “With so many bruises, you must be in a lot of pain, consider this your warning.” Before Conan could move she’d grabbed his arm and stuck the needle in.
Immediately, Shinichi’s vision began to swim, and he swayed a moment before falling back on his pillows in a very deep sleep.
“Good Night, baby…” The assassin stated, sliding the syringe in her pocket again and quickly leaving the room.
