No matter how it ended, everybody knew that this would be the final confrontation; the deciding battle. Years of training and strategizing and smaller fights had led up to this point-- and now, it was becoming clear that whoever won this clash would take the overall victory of the war with them. Both sides were putting in too much for it not to end this way. The loser would lose everything... and the winner would take it all.
Azula was not afraid. By all rights, she should have been. She'd been working with the Vatican for ages now, but she still didn't have the power or the experience that so many others did. Even with all that she was throwing into this fight, and all the near-unbeatable people that she was surrounded by, she was still one of the weaker links in the Vatican chain when compared to people like Lilith, Abel, and Cain. Even after so long, that was a shock to someone who had come from a world where she was unequivocally the best.
Lilith was afraid-- not for herself, but for those around her. Always at peace with the idea of her own loss or death, there were countless others who she openly feared losing: the brother she still hoped to get back someday, the childhood sweetheart who had become her husband, the firebending girl who had become her sister, and more. They looked to her and depended on her (even Cain, deep inside and suppressed by the consciousness of Crusnik 01), and more than anything else she was terrified of letting them down.
It had taken a lot of pressure and convincing to get the Vatican to allow her to fight today. All the higher-ups had been in favor of stowing her away somewhere safe, so that even if they lost the war, they would still have their savior, their Naia Sancta, to show them even just a tiny bit of light in a world of darkness.
Surprisingly, it was Azula who agreed with her. She had originally been on the side of the others-- of Caterina, and of Abel and the Empress Augusta, who loved her and didn't want to see her lost. But as the weeks went by, she quietly started to change her mind, until she finally spoke up in a meeting that was really only meant for people ranked far higher than she was.
"I think Lilith should fight," she said, choosing to use her first name, even though she usually called her by her title during official functions. "None of us would even be here without her, and if anyone has a chance of taking down 01, it's her." She paused. "Cain is her brother. She has the right."
It was never clear whether Azula had convinced them or if they'd assented for other reasons, but either way the Holy Madonna ended up on the front lines. Azula positioned herself next to her. No matter what happened today, she wanted them to begin and end the fight together.
As the Orden's forces just began to crest the hill laid out in front of the Vatican's more meager troop, Lilith turned to look down at the younger girl, giving her a soft smile. "It's about time we find out just how far we've come, isn't it?"
"Yes." Azula steeled herself, balling her fists and shifting her legs into a fighting stance. "Let's go."
