Zack didn't much like going to Tseng's office, and tried to avoid doing so whenever possible. There was always the possibility that he might run into Rufus there, and he saw no reason to antagonize the ShinRa scion with his presence any more than necessary ( Read more... )

Tseng heard Zack coming, but he didn't look up from the report he was paging through until he heard the SOLDIER's voice. For one thing, he hadn't expected it to be Zack, but he mastered his surprise before he lifted his dark eyes from the page, so that it looked almost as if he'd been waiting for Zack to arrive and the other man was slightly late.

"I monitor the community pretty much daily," he said dryly, gesturing towards the chair across his desk and not expecting Zack to take it. He looked too agitated to sit down. "What is it, Zack?"

Tseng's prediction was correct - Zack ignored the offered chair and paced back and forth in a short arc in front of the desk, trying to use motion to keep his heart from pounding half out of his chest. "It's Aerith," he said, both awed and shaken. "She's on the comm, Tseng. From right around the time you took me from, I think."

He swallowed hard, and managed a smile that was only a little wobbley. "I talked to her. She said I was a lousy letter writer."

Tseng nodded, understanding why Zack was so agitated - and sympathizing. When he had seen Aerith's post, he had felt like he had been punched in the chest.

"I know," he said quietly. "I talked to her. She wants...me to come visit soon."

"Yeah, you and me both." Zack shook his head and stopped pacing, facing Tseng with one hand stretched out in subconscious entreaty. He didn't want to ask, had avoided the subject because he hadn't wanted to know the answer - but now he had to. "When does she die? How does she die? What are we going to do?"

Tseng gazed at Zack steadily. "We don't need to worry about her dying until after she leaves Midgar with Cloud. As for how - she's killed by Sephiroth. I don't know exactly when, but I can approximate."

His eyes slid away, dropping to the report in front of him, though he wasn't really seeing it. "I...don't yet have a viable plan for extracting her."
