Tseng was holding it together better than Zack was, but he had been mostly monosyllabic the whole trip there, moody and quiet.
He had bluffed with Rufus, and lost. Miserably. Of course he had never had any real intention of quitting, but it annoyed him that Rufus not only knew that, but hadn't even taken it seriously for a moment. Damn Rufus' pride, anyway.
"I'm glad you approve," he said, and pointed to the bed. "Lie down before you fall down."
"I'm not going to fall down," Zack objected, but he did sit down. A little too quickly, because his legs gave out on him halfway down, but he covered it by sprawling back over the bed as if he'd intended to flop all along.
He studied the ceiling for a moment, then turned his head and looked at Tseng. "I don't suppose you could stick around for a bit," he said, keeping his voice casual and not allowing the words to turn into a plea. "I could... use the company."
Tseng's eyes narrowed as he watched Zack sprawl back, wondering if that had really been intentional. He was pretty sure he'd seen him wobble, and he gave Zack a sceptical look.
He was about to take his leave when Zack made his request.
He hesitated, then nodded and sat down on the edge of the bed. "I can stay," he said. "Though I don't know how good company I'll be."
Zack's laugh came out more like a bark, and he shook his head. "Better than Cloud has been for the last year, trust me! At least you can talk back." He gave his friend a lopsided grin. "I mean, I know I'm considered a blabbermouth by some people, but never hearing anything but your own voice for a year is a bit much."
