So I come back from my vacation, to find myself with a new trainee. He is one of the most opinionated and right-wing types I have ever talked seriously too. What's wrong with your focus being your family?
We aren't our careers, necessarily.

Well, the driving force behind my feelings is my family. I want to be a better provider, a better hunter-gatherer, if you will. I don't have the burning desire to be rich, just to move out of the lower middle class to the middle middle class would be enough for me. If I felt I could at least modestly advance myself where I am right now it wouldn't be an issue. But as it is, not only am I not gaining, I am effectively losing ground. It just seems like that to really pull into that brackett where you can live comfortably you need to have a career path of some sort.

Ahhhh, gotcha. Well, I guess you're right. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I don't really know of any.
