Ok, so I've been reading Astonishing X-Men recently, and while I've enjoyed it a lot, it also leaves me somewhat confused at times. There is so much history that it continually refers to, and attachments I'm supposed to have to characters that I just don't get ( Read more... )

Picking up things like the dark pheonix saga is a good start. House of M is also pretty interesting. Age of apacolypse will throw you for a trip. Let us see. Fatal attractions is a good trade if you can find it. I would really have to go through my collection. Um... The characters presenting in the astonishing series were largely popular in the 1980s and had a big run in the 90s too. I guess the history is so vast it is really hard to give you a compiled list to sum it all up.

Yeah, that's my worry. I guess I'm just looking for good X-men in general. Thanks!

It also depends upon which character intrigues you most. You could likely find a vast amount of info on the character histories on various Marvel Wiki sites. Most of which are pretty accurate.

I think I'm gonna go for the dark phoenix--I've heard a lot about it and it sounds intriguing. Also, I really like origin stories in general, so I'm gonna see if I can seek out some of those.

Where did you start? Joss Whedon's run on Astonishing was pretty great, and easy to get into without too much background, although it might not help with the long-scale mytharc much.

There's a really excellent X-Men FAQ somewhere online that was a big help for me. I'll see if I can dig it up.

I've read the first four so far. Mostly it's easy to follow, but every once in a while there's too much, "As you know, when Large Event happened/So-and-so did such-and-such...". And there's a lot of personal relationship history (Scott/Emma, Kitty/Peter, Angel/best friend (can't remember her name right now)) that isn't fully explained, and while it's not really necessary, it does leave me feeling lost sometimes.
