Entry #B-5: "Broad" [An Inn in Violet City, Video]

Jun 27, 2011 00:17

[L's pokegear flickers on. Judging from the height and position, it is on a bookshelf in a room at a well-furnished and comfortable-looking inn. A television is well within view of the camera feed, and the room is empty save for L's Haunter Slightly ( Read more... )

[there's no way this would escape Light's attention, and so soon after their last conversation, too. L did look as if he was in a coma, if anything... There's just so much he could say to L about all of this, be it to mock him, to perhaps offer a bit of sympathy on the matter, or maybe even to congratulate him on having gained what seemed to be a girlfriend - he supposes there's a first for everything.]

[but he'll just settle with this.] Looks like you've been having a hard time. [he may sound a little sorry for him, all things considered.]

So nice of you to offer that novel and insightful remark.

[L's not in the best of moods, currently, and he's probably taking more of it out on the network than he means to.]

No one must have told you, but very recently a large percentage of the individuals in Johto lost their souls. I was among them.

[How snarky. But while he might be a little irritated by the response, he understands L's predicament, and chooses not to comment on it. Besides, there's a more pressing matter.]

Lost... their souls? [he repeats, in disbelief. But this is only temporary. A new world, a standard of 'normal'. Not that he thinks this is supposed to be normal, of course.] Do elaborate.

The odds are rather slim that it will happen again, as everyone is currently pretty well aware of how to deal with the problem that caused it all, but it was a hot mess. Insects called Shedinjas were making off with the souls of individuals who, through ignorance or poor luck, stared too long at the markings on their backs. They spent anywhere from a few days to an entire week trapped in a different dimension, their souls representing their own self-concepts, as they fought to stay out of the darker places.

That's a relief. [with genuine relief, of course.] And your ghostly pokemon? [choosing that as a term rather than 'Haunter' to perhaps portray a false sense of helplessness from himself - he does feel like he'll need all the help he can get about the place, even if it meant getting help from L, of all people..]

Yes? What about my Haunter?

[Tetchy, L is tetchy.]

[He hadn't initially realized that each pokemon had a highly distinct personality of its own, and while he's not particularly fond of his Magikarp yet, he's somewhat interested to find out more about what it's like.]

A handful, isn't he? [He might sound just a tiny bit amused, though it's pretty well hidden. Seeing the beginnings of L getting scrubbed from the waist down... Though the situation at which this is happening isn't really something to laugh at. An awkward attempt to lighten the mood, perhaps?]

But at the very least... It does seem to care for you in its own way. [Look on the bright side, L? Even from that brief clip it's clear - L's time here before him has given him a definite edge, and also form of a solid relationship, be it with his pokemon or that girl he had just seen a moment ago. And perhaps... perhaps L has grown to be more... human during the time.]

You don't actually have the slightest idea, Light, even if you doubtless think you're being cute by pretending that you do.

The fact that he cares for me is actually the bulk of the problem. He doesn't understand that human and pokemon relationships are often somewhat different.

I wouldn't at all, not while all I've seen of him is a mere five-minute video. But even then plenty can be told from just that.

How unfortunate. [almost sympathetically, but considering the previous conversation they had, it might just sound a little mocking.] I guess I should be glad that my only pokemon for the time being is a fish, huh.

Well, it's certainly not as if he cares at all for discretion.

[L's tone says that this is his primary complaint.]

Glad? On the contrary, Light, you're highly unfortunate. That fish is the least advantageous weapon anyone could have given you.

Quite plain to see.

I suppose, but given enough effort put into it, it'll grow to be a sufficiently formidable one, I'm sure. After all, it's probably pretty shallow to boast a powerful team without having worked for it. [not directing it at anyone in particular, but merely making a point. Though it might be taken differently.]

Yes, and that's the problem.

It is shallow. If you're not willing to put in the work, you don't exactly deserve the strength and respect that comes with commanding a respectable team.

[L certainly doesn't take it that way. Though he's only actually caught one member of his current team (the Drifloon), he's managed to, through luck or just playing his cards right, gain the rest of his pokemon.]

And you simply let it be as it is? I'd have thought you'd have tried to solve the problem... [unless, of course, you failed. Or gave up.]

Exactly. So getting the one of the weakest pokemon possible isn't a bad thing, especially since it'll be much stronger in the end.

[With time, Light would probably be able to do much better than L in that aspect - considering his superior social skills, he'll be able to make luck change for his benefit, even if it initially wasn't.

My starter pokemon is a ghost, a type known for being mischievous, and he turns on the video feature on my pokegear. I can't easily get rid of either of them. Otherwise, I'd be helpless like you.

[Learn your place already, Light.]

You're wrong there. You didn't get "one of" the weakest pokemon possible. You got the weakest pokemon possible. And it's definitely not a good thing.

[In short, L has started to consider himself much luckier for having started with an impish Gastly. If anything, even the video posts have worked in his favor, since they've drawn attention to his initial ineptness and have netted help and allies.]

You have its PokeBall. You could always have chose to confine it to teach it a lesson, and eventually stopped its mischievious ways, but you chose not to. And you say that? Hilarious.

[Good luck trying to get him to do that. It'll probably never happen.]

We'll see, with time.

[Light might have gotten the worst one possible to start with, but he's determined to change this rotten stroke of luck for the better - and nothing L is going to say will change that.]

Hilarious? Really? I suppose that all the individuals who so fervently claim that I have no sense of humor can shove it.

There's quite a lot you don't know or understand about the world yet, Light. The relationship between some pokemon and their pokeballs is clearly one of them, so... I'll humor you and let that particular oversight of yours slide.
