OOC - The Character

Character: Tao Ren
Series: Shaman King
Age: 15
Class : Upper
Character Type: Heir to Tao Cryonics, a preservation of life.

Background:

The Tao family is a very dark and secretive group of people with its name deeply rooted within history, mostly tied to the topic of death. Their name is easily traced back to over three thousand years ago, though they have faded from history for a short period of time once the Industrial Era had begun. Their country for the ever-evolving technological intelligences betrayed them and they became no more important than the usual funeral home. But, the Taos are taught from an early age, ‘nothing is ever impossible for a member of the Tao’ and thus now science has been adopted into their practices.

What, then, is this family’s business exactly? Well, no one really knows for sure save for the fact that they have an extreme interest in the remains of the deceased. Outside of the family they are known for specialized cryopreservation, an afterlife service only affordable to those with an expensive lifestyle. But exceptions are occasionally made. They offer to preserve the body of someone recently deceased, until humans in the far future discover a way to live forever. They’ve expanded to the point where even a body, having suffered from a mangled death in a shredder can still be salvaged and preserved. A noble service but what really happens within the Tao walls however, is another story. There are rumours that hint towards experimentation and rebuilding of-but such stories are always denied as fantasies from watching too many Frankenstein horror films. Anything related to death is easily misunderstood or feared. (And those who ask too many questions don’t seem to live very long anyways.)

Though, it’s undeniable that they do sport an unusual interest towards corpses of exceptional athletes and scientists.

From an early age he had been brought up to follow his father, Tao En’s exact footsteps and laws. Do not get too attached to anyone outside of the family, people die everyday. Do not trust anyone outside of the family, because people are liars. Do not forget our family’s past, the Taos will not let history repeat itself. Naturally, given those strict rules to live by, Ren didn’t exactly grow up to be the friendly kid next door.

Ren is... while not exactly mature, he is a lot more serious than most other kids would be at his age. Seeing a dead body is nothing extraordinary for Ren, neither is seeing a corpse who had been victim to some of the most horrible of deaths, mutilation, drowning, massacred and all the rest. After all, dead people feed the Tao family. He’s been taught to be confident and prideful, whatever a Tao says is always going to be the right way and there is are no ifs to that statement. He would have probably been ethnocentric too, if it weren’t for the country’s betrayal that his father keeps repeating. Ren has a cold outlook in life and sees things mostly in two ways, either it’s in obstruction that needs to be erased or it’s useful and meant to be used as a tool.

The Taos are a cold family. The parents rarely associate with their children unless it is absolutely necessary and even then, the interaction is rather brisk and business-like. Ren would have probably grown up without feeling any sort of emotion if it weren’t for his close relationship with his elder sister, Jun (who surprisingly babies him still at this age, brings him his towel after baths along with a warm bottle of milk) - who is probably his only weakness right now.

Sample RP/Third Person:

There was no moon out that night although it was a clear evening and the fifteenth of the lunar calendar. The stars were faint as well, though Ren knew they existed beyond the smog-covered atmosphere. They would never be able to light up the night sky like they did a hundred years ago, no, even fifty years ago it would have been brighter. Not that Ren had ever known the skies back then, but with the increasing amount of pollutants that clouded the sky the answer was obvious.

“…It was the humans’ fault, their selfish ways and ignorant choices to further develop their sciences against the natural order, and to strengthen their useless arms and legs was what made this earth turn black from decay... They’re-” Ren paused and lifted his pen hand from the page. He frowned, what originally had started as a short essay for his sister was starting to turn into a rant. One much like what his father would say on a daily basis - Jun wouldn’t like that.

“Hn.” He grunted shortly and ripped the page from his notebook with a lot more ferocity than was needed, crumpled it up and tossed it directly into the trashcan. Impeccable aim like always, Ren allowed a grin of smug satisfaction to settle on his face before returning to his aforementioned task of essay writing. Jun, taking up the temporary position of tutor, had asked him to write about human life in general; most likely in hopes of getting him away from the morbid topics Tao En had drilled into his head.

Turning to a fresh page Ren tried writing again. “Human Life. Humans are like cockroaches, no matter how many times you poison them, step on them, burn them, cut them up or crush them they just keep on living...” He had the feeling that Jun wouldn’t like where this was headed either, but he didn’t care.

He was on his last sheet of paper.

[ooc: *coughs* I don't suppose anyone knows where I can find some Ren icons..?]
