[Background] Before the start of the story, Senji was a police officer eight years ago. At this time he already had his Branch of Sin and he was there with a team of four others to keep the rabble down after the earthquake that tore through Japan and destroyed Tokyo. He was close to these four and looked up to them. They took care of him too. So when a thug sent him a note challenging him to come out, the leader of the group incapacitated Senji so he couldn't come. This resulted in them being killed. He arrived just in time to see the leader die. He would later get a tattoo over his right eye of four letters: DSMK. The first letters of the names of his four friends who died.
When Senji is first introduced, a prisoner is telling the story about a man who caused massive destruction in the prison. After the dust had cleared, he was standing there with his blood whipping around him. He was transferred after that incident. From then on, he has been one of the prisoners located in the mysterious G Ward beneath the prison. His containment here is due to his status as a Deadman, someone who can manipulate his blood to form a deadly weapon known as a Branch of Sin.
He is the first Deadman that the main character, Ganta, comes across. After destroying the Necro Macro security robot that was chasing after Ganta and his friends, Senji proceeds to call the kid “Woodpecker”. He’s already aware of the fact that this kid is a Deadman even if the same can’t be said for the other party. For this reason, he starts to fight with him but quickly grows bored when he realizes that he’s getting nothing back in this fight. The kid discovers that he needs to use his own blood for attacks and the fight continues. Ganta ends up slamming a blood bullet into Senji’s chest. Excited by this, Senji moves in to attack more. Shiro, an albino girl who is with Ganta, tackles him to the ground to protect her friend. Right away he starts yelling at her about her poor choice in clothing since it’s immodest and risqué. This gives the prison guards the time needed to move in and detain everyone at the scene.
Senji is taken to the hospital area of G Ward. There he is told by the female doctor that works there that fighting in his match with Ganta the next day wouldn’t be wise and that it might be better to cancel it. He quickly tells her (while holding one of his Crow Claw blades to her throat) that she will not be stopping the fight. This is a match that he’s too excited about to miss.
The next day, he arrives in the battle arena with Ganta. What the match turns out to be is a battle between Deamen with viewers watching every moment of it. This is Carnival Corpse. The battle begins and Senji clearly has the advantage do to his experience with his Branch of Sin. The boy, on the other hand, struggles and starts to lose blood fast since he’s shooting with his own blood. Soon, it looks like Senji has won. But, as he’s walking away, the kid pushes himself past his limits to grab Senji’s ankle. This impresses him and the fight goes on. Ganta ends up knocking a speaker down so that it moves to fall on top of Senji. He laughs and slashes it to pieces while missing that Ganta has moved closer to shoot his blood bullet right at his chest. He falls back having lost the match. He congratulates Ganta for having defeated him.
The consequence of losing in Carnival Corpse is that the prisoner must then undergo a game. Senji is strapped to a chair for this game which is shown all over the prison. The same doctor from before (who is really so sickly sadistic) is there and starts up a machine that has a similar appearance to that of a slot machine. When the images stop spinning, it is revealed that they all say right eye. The game continues as the doctor moves in and removes his right eye. Since he lost the match, he has to lose a body part for “science research”.
He isn’t seen again until he shows up during round two of Ganta’s match with Minatsuki. His attitude towards Ganta has changed and he supports him. (Now he has an eye patch to cover his missing eye.) What he tells the kid is that his attacks are easy to read since they’re shot in a straight line. At the same time, he also tells him that the name of his attack is called the ‘Ganta Gun’. (He went ahead and named it for the boy.) Also, he lets him know that all of Minatsuki’s blood whips come from one place. Before walking away to watch the rest of the fight he tells him that he can’t lose…that’s the duty of someone who beats Senji. Ganta goes on to use this information to shoot the gun at the post behind Minatsuki so that it comes back to shoot at her. He wins the match (by head butting her.) Senji watches as Ganta flips off the people at the end when they tell her to kill her.
After the match, he meets up with Ganta (it seems he’s developed a respect and fondness for the kid) and tells him to treat him to ramen to celebrate. There he tells him that he has a long way to go. Constantly shooting his Ganta Gun isn’t going to help him since the attacks are too predictable. They continue to talk and he imitates Ganta flipping off the spectators, telling him that he likes his style. Senji goes on to tell the kid about the Deadmen. That they’re still prisoners and that winning can be a good and bad thing in the prison.
Senji is seen again after Ganta has faced one of the Undertakers. These are a group that are meant to keep the Deadmen under control and are the personal army for the man in charge of the prison. They’re the Anti-Deadman Corps. When Senji finds out that Ganta faced the Undertakers, he gets upset and can’t believe he didn’t share that experience with him. After he settles down, he tells Ganta about Nagi’s story. He says that Nagi has a bone to pick with the Undertakers. For that reason, Ganta goes to join Nagi’s cause.
(Later it is made clear that Senji has some sort of history with Karako who is with Nagi’s group. Other than it being said that they were rivals of some sort, this history isn’t clear.)
After the Scar Chain plan fails and Nagi is captured, Undertakers come to the rest of the gang. It looks like Ganta is going to be killed by two of them when suddenly they’re cut into pieces by Senji who has shown up saying that if Ganta wants to fight these guys he has to remember to invite him. How he knew the Undertakers would be there is unknown. The rest of Scar Chain joins in fighting the Undertakers and he goes to attack one only to discover that his Crow Claw doesn’t work. In fact, it completely breaks. So, he brings out a new level that he’s been working on without telling anyone. Invisible Black which is a blade that moves at the speed of sound. It defeats the weapons easily. At the end of the fight, Karako asks him to join Scar Chain. He only laughs and refuses, telling them the perfect world that they think is outside of the prison doesn’t exist, then leaves.
Ganta comes to him asking him to train him. The kid wants to be stronger, to blow away his old self. Senji tells him that’s the right answer and agrees the training. It’s hard and he doesn’t take it easy on Ganta. In fact, when the kid continues to not get it, he adds the incentive of smashing all but one of his candies. This one he hangs up and says that there are three days that he has left. If he gets past him, he can have that candy. To get it, he has to get his Ganta Gun faster than his own Invisible Black.
As they continue to train more, Senji sees something interesting. When the bullets are shot while anemia is in control, they’re faster. At that point, the Undertakers make the announcement that they have Karako and Shiro. Ganta runs out to go save them leaving Senji in the training room.
[Personality] Senji is someone who loves to fight. He gets a thrill from it and loves to find strong opponents to do battle with. It seems that he’s constantly trying to find that next person to fight and defeat. He seems to completely enjoy violence when it comes to a fight between people. It would lead one to believe that he hates to be defeated but it’s somewhat the opposite. He has respect for those who can defeat him. Despite this love for violence he has a sense of honor and respects strength. And he especially respects those with the guts to power through a situation and push past limits set for them. And, if someone doesn’t fight him during a battle then he will just walk away seeing no point in bothering.
When first meeting people, he can come across as a wild guy who only loves to fight. However, he does care about certain individuals. Specifically Ganta. Ever since the kid beat him in the match, he’s become something like a big brother to him. Offering advice, helping him get stronger, filling him in on details about things going on in G Ward. On the other hand, he has no respect for those who want to remain as they are without getting stronger. He finds people like that pointless.
An activity he is often found doing is training. The exercise room is generally where he can be found. There he works to become even stronger. Both physically and with his Branch of Sin. While he can come to respect those who defeat him, he doesn’t want to be defeated. What he’d rather have happen is him winning against a strong opponent. For this reason, he’s constantly working to improve himself. Become a stronger and better fighter.
This doesn’t mean he fights all the time. In fact, when he’s first shown in G Ward he’s not training and he’s not fighting. He’s reading a book. Relaxing and reading a book. There are times when he likes to have some time just to do things like that. Of course, he does reveal a bit of a sadistic nature as he uses his blood to slash up a moth flying through the air afterwards using his catchphrase “Dead Center”.
In a most comical twist, Senji becomes extremely embarrassed and flustered when around women acting immodest. Of course, this is his own definition of the word since a female body can be nicely covered but if the clothing is too tight he’ll call it risqué. If the woman really pushes this to the point of showing him her underwear (canon evidence would be Minatsuki doing this to him) he will pass out with a major nosebleed. His typical reaction though is to tell the woman to put some clothes on and even offer his jacket to help her do so.
That said, he won’t hesitate to fight or attack a woman if he has to. While he doesn’t like doing this, he’s not one to just not do so. Especially if said woman is going to stop him from fighting (example: when the sadistic female doctor told him it might not be a good idea to fight the next day).
He’s definitely someone who is very rough around the edges. A tough guy describes him well. Even with the love for violence, he still relaxes and kicks back with friends. He’s also more observant than he originally seems. Senji is very aware of his surroundings much of the time. An exception would be when Ganta tricked him during their Carnival Corpse match.
[Specialties/Abilities] His main ability is that he can manipulate his blood to become a weapon. These can be simple blood whips but he usually forms his blood into two long blades extending from his forearms. This is his Branch of Sin which he calls Crow Claw. Crow Claw blades are very hard and good for close combat. However, he can also make them useful for ranged combat as well by lengthening the blades to extend far beyond him. He can do this without adding more blood to it and can shoot them out to a great distance in just a matter of seconds. An extension of this is that he can gather up his blood that has been spilled around him and use that as well.
Another ability that extends from this is called Invisible Black. From the top of his hand, he calls out a blade that can slice into the enemy at the speed of sound. This makes it next to impossible to defeat. All his blood techniques require that he be bleeding. If he isn’t, he can’t use Crow Claw or Invisible Black. For this reason, he wears a bladed ring on both thumbs so he can easily slice for what he needs.
Senji tends to use his powers all the time leading him to be very experienced with them. But, he is also very strong and agile even without them due to his constant training. He has very resistant body that can handle rather intense attacks. He can endure something painful and end up laughing it off. If it’s in battle, it excites him to have someone get him in pain.
[Affection] To most, Senji gives absolutely no affection. Gain his respect and maybe that will be another matter. But if you’re female, he is more like to be absolutely humiliated and flustered while around you. For the most part, he only treats Ganta as a little brother. Everyone else? Eh. Screw you unless you want to fight. (No offense though.)
[Fighting] If it’s a fight you’re looking for, Senji is your man. He loves to fight and can handle most attacks with ease. He can die but he’s not easy to kill. In fact, he’ll find a new way to fight you if the first way doesn’t work.
[Other Permissions] Anyone can read his mind since he can't defend that. However, talk to me first about what they'll see since Senji might react violently to any and all invasions.
[Other Facts] Senji is very rough around the edges. He’s a fighter by nature and that’s a fact that he’s fine with. In fact, he enjoys it. It’s unlikely he’ll be really affectionate with anyone since males are opponents right away or too weak to bother with and females are pretty much the evil temptresses of the world. Another fact about him is that he eats a lot. Not as much as one of his fellow Deadmen but certainly more than most. And he can eat it all quickly. This is probably to keep up his energy since he trains so often. Also, he seems to treat Ganta almost like a little brother figure. And, his exact crime for being thrown in prison in the first place is currently unknown.
