They decide to meet. In the flesh.
Colin’s brother is crashing at their grandmother’s place so it’s a perfect opportunity for Colin to take the train to London. Bradley waits for him in the station. He gets there an hour early and repeatedly rubs his sweaty palms against his jeans. It’s just really hot in the station, okay?
When the train doors open Bradley instantly recognizes Colin. The day before they’d been talking about how they were going to find each other. Bradley had suggested that Colin should wear a recognizable color. Like pink. Or bring a big sign that said: Looking for Bradley James. In the end Colin had just given a vague description of what he looked like and Bradley had given a detailed description of what he looks like. (“If I don’t find you,” Bradley had said, “I’ll just start screaming your name, ‘kay?”)
Seeing Colin for the first time kind of knocks all the air out of Bradley’s lungs.
Colin gives him a small smile and says: “Hi, Bradley?” And yeah… that’s his voice alright. Bradley smiles and thinks: this is gonna be brilliant.
Bradley has a entire, totally awesome day planned for them because Colin’s never been to London before and honestly, that’s a wrong Bradley can’t wait to fix.
“How can you live an hour away and never visit London?” They’re in the tube, on their way to their first stop, Westminster. Bradley figures that’s probably the best place to start the grand tour.
“I’ve only been living with my grandmother for a couple of months. I never had the opportunity to just go out. And before that I lived too far away to actually visit anything.”
The closer they get to their stop the more people start flooding in and Bradley thinks the only logical thing to do is to just lean nearer and nearer. It gets awfully loud in there after all, and he wants to make sure he doesn’t miss a word of what Colin’s saying. When they come to a rough stop and Colin stumbles into him a little, Bradley quickly grabs a hold of his wrist and waist to steady him.
Bradley doesn’t let go immediately and instead slides his hand from Colin’s wrist to his hand, squeezing it softly. Bradley’s already doing a little happy dance inside when Colin suddenly looks away before pulling his hand out of Bradley’s. He coughs awkwardly as more people try to push their way inside, pressing them closer together.
Bradley frowns.
They stare up at Big Ben, Houses of Parliament, The Eye and they get some hotdogs on Westminster bridge. (Well, Bradley gets some and then, when he suddenly remembers that Colin doesn’t eat meat, he looks down at the two hotdogs he’s holding and says: “I’m really hungry,” before taking a bite from both hotdogs, smiling awkwardly.)
Bradley knows Colin loves aquariums so the way he figures it, buying two tickets to the London Aquarium is definitely going to score him some points. Once they’re inside, however, Bradley doesn’t think this was such good idea anymore, because now Colin’s paying attention to everything around them, except Bradley. Also, the longer they’re in the aquarium the quieter Colin gets and there’s, honestly, only so much Bradley can chatter on and on about, without getting a response. So, to his dismay, he spends most of the afternoon walking around after Colin, sulking.
After Westminster and the aquarium things continue to go downhill a bit. Or a lot. Colin squirms away from Bradley every chance he gets, preferring to stand at least half a meter away from him at all times. Bradley tries to put his arm around Colin’s shoulder in Hyde Park just to get it shrugged off; he offers to pay for Colin’s ice-cream but gets turned down.
Then, the absolute highlight of their day happens on Tower Bridge, (only the most romantic bridge Bradley could think of.)
Bradley’s trying to think of reasons why things aren’t running smoothly. Reasons that don’t have anything to do with Bradley as a person. And he’s pretty much failing. He stares at the back of Colin’s head, (Colin’s walking ahead quite a bit by now,) and thinks that just maybe Colin’s still nervous. And maybe Bradley should make his feelings for Colin very clear with a somewhat bold move. So when they reach the middle of the bridge Bradley decides to just go for it and all but dives in for a kiss. Colin steps back, and when Bradley opens his eyes he sees a completely freaked-out, panicked look in Colin’s eyes and he almost feels bad for ever suggesting that they meet.
“Sorry,” Bradley says softly. And he doesn’t remember the last time he’s felt this miserable. ‘Cause maybe Bradley really is the problem.
“Want to just call it a day?” He asks.
Colin nods; he looks almost as miserable as Bradley feels.
They take the subway to Bradley’s apartment but instead of coming in Colin sort of lingers on the doorstep.
Bradley blinks, “You can come on in.”
“I think maybe…” Colin starts, “maybe I should just get back to the train station and just go home or something.”
No. No no no. They haven’t talked about this yet, they haven’t fixed it. Colin can’t leave. No matter how much this day didn’t go as Bradley had planned it, he doesn’t want to part from Colin just yet. And definitely not like this. Not before Colin is completely crazy about him.
“No, come on,” Bradley says, reaching out for him but Colin - just as expected - pulls back. “We can’t just part on awkward terms,” Bradley finishes.
“Maybe this awkwardness means that I should just go home. We tried, right? That’s something…”
But Bradley won’t have any of that. “It’s only awkward because you’re making it awkward!”
Colin’s eyes widen. “Geez, thanks.”
“No! I didn’t…” Bradley gapes. Damage control isn’t really his strong suit.
“I don’t understand what went wrong!” He says quickly. “I wanted to hold your hand in the tube - you pulled away. I wanted to kiss you out on the bridge - you acted like I was gonna push you off. And you won’t even look at me. I thought you liked me. If you don’t, or if there’s something wrong with me, you should just tell me…”
Colin is silent for a while, eyeing the floor and his shoes. But then he looks up and says: “Everyone kept teasing me: what if he’s ugly, what if he’s really, really ugly? And the truth is I wouldn’t have cared if you were.”
Bradley’s eyes widen and he looks down at the outfit he chose (very carefully, thank you very much,) the previous night and his heart sinks completely.
“But you’re…” Colin continues, “You’re really, really good looking and I just wasn’t prepared for that, because now I feel like you got the short end of the stick and you’re stuck with me. I mean,” Colin takes a deep breath, “…you’re probably the nicest guy I’ve ever met and you really don’t have to be so nice to me and hold my hand and kiss me, just because you feel sorry for making me come all the way here. You can just drop me off at the station and I’ll catch the last train back. It’s okay, really.”
And Colin’s turning around, heading towards the door, leaving… but Bradley decides enough is enough.
He grabs Colin’s hand, pulls him in and presses his lips down against Colin’s. It’s kind of crooked because Colin tried to move away, but he’s not moving anymore. He’s just standing there completely still. Bradley pulls away, “I’m not that nice, Colin. I’m actually not very nice at all. I’m nice to you because, in case you haven’t noticed, I’m pretty much head over heels for you and I do think,” Bradley kisses Colin again, quickly, “That you’re really very pretty.”
“Oh.” Colin says, softly.
Bradley puts his hands over Colin’s ears, cupping them gently, as he slides his thumbs over the ridges, ‘til they settle on the soft earlobes. Bradley’s hands stretch out over Colin’s neck, pulling him even closer, while his thumbs, all the while, keep caressing Colin’s earlobes.
“Your lips,” Bradley whispers against Colin’s mouth, “are probably the most pornographic lips I’ve ever seen.” And Colin lets out a huffed chuckle, sounding surprised and more than a little out of breath.
Bradley takes this opportunity to kiss Colin’s bottom lip, nipping at it sharply before sucking away the sting. He slides his mouth to Colin’s cheek, mouthing along his cheekbone. “And your ears,” Bradley says as his lips reach them, replacing his thumb with his mouth, biting down on the lobe softly, “are ridiculously cute.”
Bradley pulls back to look at Colin’s face, hands falling from his neck. And Colin’s smiling, really smiling, and Bradley can’t believe how it makes Colin look even more beautiful. So he grins too, (obviously,) and he doesn’t even care that he had to say all that mushy stuff to make that smile appear.
“You are nice,” Colin says.
“I believe you also said that I’m really, really good looking.”
Colin rolls his eyes halfheartedly.
“So you’re staying, right?” And before Colin has finished nodding Bradley’s lips are seeking out his once more.
When Bradley later confesses that he’d been lying on the telephone earlier, about having a guest bedroom, Colin makes him sleep on the couch. Bradley thinks it’s just to teach him a little lesson though, because the next morning he wakes up with Colin cuddled up to his side.
He makes Colin breakfast and they pretty much spend the whole day making out on the couch. And doing other stuff. On the couch.
Monday morning they have to get back to the train station and they hold hands the entire way. As for Bradley, he can no longer hide the pout that’s been threatening to surface ever since he woke up this morning.
“Don’t go,” he says, pulling at Collin’s sleeve and going for adorable.
“I have to go,” Collin says, but he kisses Bradley anyway.
“No, you don’t,” Bradley tries. “We could elope.”
“You do remember that we’ll be seeing each other again next weekend, right?” Colin seems amused.
Bradley huffs.
When the train gets there Bradley can see that maybe Colin isn’t as cool about leaving as he was pretending to be. He buries his face in Bradley’s neck as they hug and when he pulls back he’s pouting too. However, when the train rolls out of the station, he leans through the open window and smiles, waving a heartfelt goodbye.
When Colin gets back, his grandmother is on the phone. When she sees him she puts her hand on the receiver and says: “It’s that nice boy you have a crush on.” Colin grins and reaches out his hand. His grandmother, however, ignores him and continues talking to Bradley for another half an hour.
Colin sighs and thinks: only four more days.
Lol; and a little extra:
Vet!Colin and Jealous!Bradley
The problem with dating a vet, Bradley thinks as he stares at his boyfriend, is that every time Colin comes to his place he pays more attention to Toby (the puppy) and Scratch (the kitten) than he does to Bradley.
Bradley throws one of the couch pillows at Colin.
“Hey!” Colin yells. “You could have hit Toby!”
Bradley sulks. This is not fair, he thinks. He would’ve said it too, if he wasn’t sure that 1) Colin wasn’t listening to him any way and 2) it made him sound like a pre-adolescent girl.
He, instead, opts for letting out a low whine.
“You sound like a dog when you do that.” Colin says, not looking up from where Scratch just came to sit on his lap.
“Maybe if I were dog, you’d actually pay more attention to me.”
Colin starts to laugh, but then he looks up to see that Bradley’s really sulking. Not that Bradley’s proud of his new status of boyfriend-who’s-jealous-of-animals, but he does feel a pang of pride as Colin gets up from his spot on the floor and comes to sit next to him on the couch.
“I’m sorry?” Colin asks, looking up at him adorably and Bradley can’t help but grin.
“I guess you’ll just have to make up to me,” he mumbles, already edging closer to Colin’s lips.
His boyfriend closes the gap between them and Bradley hums happily into the kiss. Colin goes to straddle his lap and just as Bradley starts to think this might become the best afternoon ever, Toby starts biting at his foot.
“What the!” Bradley nudges the puppy away, causing Toby to start yelping up at him, angrily. Scratch, attracted by all the commotion, jumps on the couch and climbs her way in between Colin and Bradley, cuddling up to Colin and hissing at Bradley when he so much as tries to reach for her.
“Oh for fuck sake,” Bradley groans, dropping his head to the back of the couch. “We’re never gonna have sex,” Bradley says, covering his face with his hands. “Ever. We’ll have to wait ‘till these guys die and by then we’ll be twenty years from now and you’ll have already left me for some other dude who will be a lot less attractive than me but who won’t have evil cats and dogs.”
Colin pries Bradley’s hands from his face, taking them in his own instead. “Or we could just go to your bedroom and close the door,” Colin offers, smirking.
And if Bradley catches Colin cuddling with Scratch the next day…so what? It’s not like he can really bring himself to care. At least not when Colin’s wearing his sweater and smiling up at him with that smile, that makes Bradley’s knees give out.
