It's not that The Corpse Bride is a bad film -- it's just that Burton (once again) squandered the talent he had at his disposal. Not outright bad like Charlie was at times, but it certainly fell on its face on more than a couple occasions. What I didn't get is whether he was trying to make it a musical or if the musical bits were just incidental ( Read more... )

I totally agree. I think that people could just as well save the four dollars and rent 'Nightmare' because they are essentially the same movie with a few minor variations. I sort of felt that, and this going to sound incredibly pretentious, the film was pandering; it was a thinly veiled recreation of a movie that was very popular and highly lucrative for him. Take some chances for god's sake, Tim Burton!

I missed 2046 as well :(

I am beyond excited for the release of "A History of Violence" this weekend.

I wished I'd seen that instead. Although I'm kind of irritated by the movie if only because I've seen more stills of Croenenburg directing the movie than the actual film itself.

I agree though, it seemed pandering. Severely lacking in soul.

2046 is beautiful and if anyone else had directed it i'd be extremely excited at the arrival of an obviously important new talent.

for Kar Wai, though, it's a bit of a letdown, especially after In the Mood for Love.

By the same token, not many movies of the history of film can even crawl next to In the Mood for Love. It'd be worth it for me to see how he integrated his CG stuff.

it always bothers me that most folks have NO idea that burton didn't direct 'nightmare...'
i am still (warily) looking forward to seeing this, though.

Parts of it are good. I tend to think it was worth seeing because of how pretty it is, but that's just me.

Just last night, I was trying to explain to someone why I'm ambivalent about Tim Burton most of the time. "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" is still one of my all-time favorites, but Tim Burton movies are always kind of like eating at Burger King. You know what you're going to get, and it's pretty good, but never great. I have no interest in seeing "Charlie", "the Corpse Bride", and these days, the only Hollywood stuff I really want to see is the old-timey movies.

As for "2046", I subjected several friends to watching it with me. They were all bored out of their minds, but I loved it. The CGI was nice. Not the centerpiece of the film as the trailer would lead you to believe, but enhanced the existing story. Also, Faye Wong made a fantastically perfect android.
