title: Blink
rating: pg-13
summary: she's wonderful, brilliant, funny, she's Karen--and he wonders how anyone could ever imagine leaving her.
a/n: my first RPF! I love these two, on-screen and off-screen! I hope I captured them well enough.
Matt ran his fingers through his hair, it was raining---pouring actually, and he's back in his flat after 14 hours of filming. Oh, and he can't sleep. It's not the rain against his window, it's not worry about tomorrow's shoot, or nerves from the schedule he's got piling up. Doctor Who, Christopher's Kind, interviews...
He involentarily jumps as someone pounds on his door. Matt checks the clock on the wall, it's 1:15am, who would show up this late? He isn't sure who to expect, so when he pulls open his door and finds a sopping wet Karen Gillan, his jaw slacks open in surprise.
"Kaz?"
"Hi."
"Come in! Gosh, look at you, man!" Matt moves out of the way, "I'll grab you a towel."
Karen unwinds the scarf from around her neck and shrugs off her jacket, she's glad he hasn't noticed, but she could also thank the weather for that. She feels silly, foolish even for coming here. 'but it's Matt.' And that's all the reason she needs to show up at his flat not even an hour after filming.
He returns with two towels and throws one over her head, making her laugh. He takes her jacket from her hands and drapes it over a chair as Karen ruffles the towel over her hair. Coming here was a good idea, she feels better already. "Take a seat, man. You feeling alright?"
"Yeah...couldn't sleep..." Karen says sitting on his couch, his flat is picked up (but maybe that's because their respective flats are just for sleeping and the Doctor Who trailers are more like home..) Matt joins her and pokes her shoulder, "You could have called."
"I left my phone...just..." Karen looks at the television, "Ooh you geek, watching Doctor Who."
He laughs, not denying it, because they're both geeks...watching previous episodes and the very episodes that he and Karen filmed for. It's hard to not watch something you've grown up with.
"Mm, it's Blink! Classic and your favorite." Karen laughs, scooting closer to Matt, and settling herself next to him. They used to sit like this on the tour bus; close and comfortable. Matt squirms a bit as her still-wet hair tickles his neck.
It's quiet, except for Sally Sparrow watching the easter egg of The Doctor, and the sound of the rain. Matt's ready to fall asleep like this, with Kaz snuggled up to his side. He leans his head back on the couch and Karen wraps her arm around his lean waist.
His mind his drifting off, content, warm, a long day on the set...time is slowing down when Karen's voice makes his eyes open, and he didn't even realize he closed them; "We broke up..."
He instantly knows who 'we' is. "Oh...aw man, I'm sorry." Matt sits up enough to pull Karen into a tight hug. "That why you left your phone? Storming off all proper and Karen-like?"
She nods into his shoulder. Matt rubs her back in soothing circles, "Well, he's daft, is what he is. You're wonderful..."
"Shut up." She moves her hand and pinches his side.
"Ow! Hey!" He jerks back and stares into her smiling, tear-stained, face. "I'm trying to be a good mate here, Kaz." He says as he nurses the sore spot on his ribs.
Matt reaches out without giving it a second thought and wipes away a tear with his thumb.
"You want some tea or uh whatever else I have?"
"I'll take a cup of tea..."
And as Matt stands, he hits his shin on the coffee table, and Karen grimaces. He's a total clumsy fool, but she wouldn't have it any other way. Matt runs both hands through his hair as he waits for the kettle, listening to Karen both sniffle and laugh; the iconic words of "The angels have the phone box, I got that on a T-shirt."
He can't believe it. Why would anyone ever leave her? She's magnificent, she's terribly funny, she's got all this energy and she's beautiful. Matt just can't wrap his head around it.
"Hey Matt?"
"Hm?"
She's moved from the couch and is leaning against his wall, her hair damp and framing her face, the only proof that she was outside. She's quiet, like she wants to tell him something but isn't sure. Matt looks back to the kettle, running a hand through his hair again.
"I saw it coming, the break-up, we had been getting into fights about all this...stupid...stuff and..." Karen sighs, "Well, you know, the job takes a lot outta the social life."
"Kaz, you don't have to tell me anything..." He knows she will anyways.
"Awww, that's sweet, Matt." She moves away from the wall and he smiles, "but you're not shutting me up that easily!"
Matt grins, "Do me a favor and grab some mugs," he points to a cabinet.
When they're settled back on the couch with the ending of Blink and all its timey-wimey-ness, Karen tells him everything. He just sips his tea and listens, because he can't do much else ; she's got her feet in his lap with her rainbow socks that he remembers. She tells him about some of the stupid fights, tells him how she stormed out of her flat without an umbrella because she was so upset, and tells him how she dodged some of the paps because she didn't want to be snapped looking like this.
It's nearly 2:30am and she's gotten her feet of her lap and now her head is on his chest. "C'mon..." He nudges her, "You can steal my bed for the night."
"Or I could stay here." Karen looks up at Matt and he meets her hazel eyes.
"Yeah..." Matt turns his head to see info-commercials on the television now. He draps his arm around her hips and hopes she knows that he isn't trying to make a move on her--it's Kaz and she just stormed out of her long-time boyfriend. Karen lets out a long sigh and shuts her eyes, feeling completely relaxed and at ease for the first time today.
She giggles, making a mental note to tease him because he snores (softly, and it's kind of cute, but he doesn't need to know that..) and Karen falls asleep ontop of Matt, her friend, her Doctor, and maybe, just maybe, he'll end up being much more than that. But, not right now--right now is the time for half-finished tea, old Doctor Who episodes, and falling asleep together.
