He is waiting by the Tree. She will come tonight, he knows. Subaru-kun remains in shell-shocked silence in his room, and Hokuto has been wracking her mind with a way to snap him out of it.
She is too kind.
And naive. To still believe in happily-ever-after when she knows - has known - his intentions.
Still, he waits, and the niggling voice that has gotten louder this past year tells him that he can always leave.
Again, he ignores it.
She is suddenly walking toward him, and he straightens. It has been a month since he has last seen her but there is a new determined set to her face.
"Finally," she says. "I've found you."
He doesn't say anything.
"I won't let you," she continues. "I will never let you kill Subaru. I will never let you kill him."
There is silence for a moment.
"You broke the promise."
He raises an eyebrow. "What promise?"
"I told you. Don't take Subaru far away from me."
"But he's sitting in his room room now."
She shakes her head. "But you took him mind. It might not come back," she explained. "So I'm going to put a spell on you."
"But you don't have the power to kill me, Hokuto-chan," he says with a small smile.
"I know," Hokuto admits. "I know I can't beat you. But, there are spells only I can cast."
This intrigues him. "Only... you?"
"I found out who the Sakurazukamori really is, so kill me."
He smiles and nods. "I shall."
His hand is already moving as she steps even closer to him.
"If you die," he muses, "Subaru-kun will be sad."
She smiles up at him. "I... know. But I want him to live. I know that it's selfish, but I want you and Subaru to... live."
"Why me?" he asks in disbelief. "I hurt Subaru-kun, and I am killing you, as well."
"I know," she coughs. "But I still want you to live. No matter how bad a person you are, I still like you. Only Subaru can kill you, and only you can kill him." She raises her hand. "So, I'm going to put a spell on you. If you try to kill him the same way you killed me, it will backfire and kill you."
He places his hand on her cheek. "Why tell me?"
She looks at him seriously. "It doesn't matter if you don't know," she explains. "In the end, I need to trust that you won't activate the spell."
"I'm not the person to put your trust in," he tells her, even though he's sure she already knows that.
"I know. But, you are special to Subaru," she says quietly. Her breath is catching in her throat and her heart is slowing. "That's why I want to trust you. There isn't anyone who can't love, Sei-chan."
His eyes widen and she smile at him one last time before her heart stops, her brother's name on her lips.
