Yesterday at elementary school I was invited to practice with the ping-pong team after school. That's right, there's a team AND they practice! Not only do they practice, but they stretch and warm-up before playing too. It's all very intense, as is everything in Japan evidently. So how'd I do? Well I'm the Forrest Gump of ping-pong! Shame, shame... I don't doubt that you've heard of a little worldly athletic competetion called "the Olympics." Well, the "game" you described above is one of the most popular events. Much like billiards, the sport began in England with the aristocratic elite. Obviously, it is now a world-class game, and enjoyed especially by the Asian community. China often clears the medals in the Olypic games, however (North and South) Korea and Sweden claimed medals in 2004. The game, however, is correctly termed "table tennis," not ping-pong (the original name given due to the sound the ball makes, but now a commercialized tradename for such sporting equimpent) and has not been called that since the 1930's. I once worked with a Chinaman who was sent away by his father at the age of nine to endure a summer-long training camp for table tennis, and he claimed this was very common for children of his age.
